I can't believe this came out in the early 70's. It sounds like it's much more recent, like it was created some time in the mid to late 90's. Just the way the album was recorded gives off that feeling I guess. The recording technology was surprising back then, and it's amazing how good the album sounds.
Anyway, I understand some people have a problem with the lead singer of Flower Travellin' Band, and I admit I too had that same problem. He doesn't exactly have a welcoming voice. However, after a few times, I was able to adjust, and I think other people can do.
What's really unique about this album, something that I've not heard before from a 70's album, is how the guitar playing has a mystical/adventurous vibe that gives it a very original sound. Not really a Black Sabbath sounding album though, since Sabbath were known for those monster heavy guitar riffs that echoe through your speakers. This band is something... completely different.
I can't even explain it. The guitar playing is totally centered around an Asian sound, and it's creative and inventive to the extreme. It's some of the coolest guitar playing I've heard in quite some time, that's for sure.
Music is all about adventure, and this band is very good at that. I say, if you're in the mood to hear a type of music that you've probably never heard before, give it a go. Yes, it's not an album you can get into immediately- give it some time. What might sound bad at first will probably eventually turn into something exciting. That's the greatest thrill you can have when it comes to music.
