Free Music Notes for Archives Vol. 1: Live at the Avalon Ballroom 1969Free Music Review: Disc ONE Hit: 5 Stars
Disc one (April 4, 1969) is for the ages. The group is in a good groove in terms of pacing and voice. The song sequence is perfect. A slam-bam country opening with Sneaky Pete's affective guitar and Gram's glorious voice running through five strong classic works. The set includes the three best Parsons-Burrito-penned songs (Hot Burrito #1, #2, Sin City). All the plaudits for Gram's singing through the years could have applied to his effort here (Honky Tonks, She Once Lived Here, Long Black Limousine--gracious!). Even a little talking by the old boy between songs. There are a couple of blemishes. The Bramlett song is fully forgettable (hey, it was the late 60s). Chris Ethridge attempts once again to destroy HB#1 with his bass part from Hell. But those are small quibbles. Play disc 1 and thank the fates.
Free Music Review: Long lost Burritos Hit: 5 Stars
There's still no adequate film record of this genre-bending country-rock pioneer band, but here's an audio gem. Their first rangy sets from George Jones to Hot Burrito #2 after the seminal Gilded Palace of Sin album was released to mostly yawns from the hip public. Opening for the equally pioneering Grateful Dead, it's the opposite type of venue than the Palomino and other hard country dives in L.A. the Burritos worked up this material in. While he was never a virtuoso, Gram Parsons' voice from the past carries with it the trials and well as the good times, and sadly it would all be over in a few years and a couple of excellent, groundbreaking, Emmylou-launching albums later. Check out founding Burrito Chris Hillman & fellow Desert Rose member Herb Pederson's Bakersfield Bound to see how this all turned out.
Free Music Review: excelente edicion!! Hit: 5 Stars
Free Music Review: Live at the Avalon Ballroom Hit: 5 Stars
When I heard that these two live shows were being produced, I was ecstatic. These performances have been hidden away for nearly 30 years! I became a fan of Gram after he passed away so I never thought I would experience the feeling of being in the audience during a live show. These two CDs take you back to 1969, when Gram was a mere 23 years old. The quality is not that of today's live performances and its apparent that the FBBs were young and not as polished as they became with more experience. However, these are amazing CDs for fans of Gram and the Flying Burrito Bros. To the people responsible for getting these out, THANK YOU! You'll feel like you were there at the Avalon Ballroom in 1969...
Free Music Review: Gram is at his emotional best!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Gram Parson fans be sure to get this one. Recorded at the Avalon Ballroom in 1969, this has got to be his best live recording. Each song is sung with great emotion and feeling. This is the best Flying Burrito Brothers live recording ever. The original band is there except Mike Clark (the drummer) who was not on the first album is present. Both sets are included and Gram sings Hot Burrito 1 and 2 with that deep emotional voice I have to play those cuts over and over again. The voice mix could have been better -- I cannot hear Chris Hillman too well but what do you expect--it was 1969. GET THIS NOW!!! I am looking forward to future live releases of this band from sixties gigs.
