Free Music Review: The Birth of Country Rock
Hit: 5 Stars

An outstanding live snapshot of the late great Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers that almost got away. Recently discovered on an unlabelled reel in the Grateful Dead's tape vault (the Burritos opened for the Dead at the Avalon on 3 nights in April 1969) the CD is comprised of the first and third nights. What's so cool is hearing the differences in the performances - about half of the songs are repeats - and how the band both loosens up and gets tighter from night to night. A lot of artists are credited with being the force behind the emergence of the country rock sound but after listening to these guys there shouldn't be any doubt as to who that should be.

Free Music Review: Gold From The Mine
Hit: 5 Stars

Even if this wasn't simply an awesome double set of live music, the sound alone is unreal. The recorder of this album, Grateful Dead soundman/guru/ psychedelic engineer Owsley was clearly at least a decade ahead in making live-concert sound. I'm just hoping the "Archives Vol. 1" title isn't just optimism, I'd buy Parsons and the Burritos of this quality for as many concerts as they can pull out of the can. Did I read five or six hours more? I think so, of course there'd be a lot of repetition but there's not much on this first double set (..and "Sin City" is worth ten encores!). Thanks to whoever made this possible. All of you!

Free Music Review: A Dream Come True
Hit: 5 Stars

I've died and gone to heaven with the release of this live Burrito Brothers material. I'm a long time, diehard fan of Gram Parson and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Given the small time frame that they operated within, let it suffice to say that that the discography is pretty small given the size of their footprint on contemporary music. This double record from thirty nine years ago is a great addition to my collection. It also reminds us of how important Gram and the rest of the Burritos are in the evolution of what's known as country rock. Since this is labeled volume one, I can't wait for future releases.

Free Music Review: Finally--a well recorded Live Flying Burrito Bros disk set!
Hit: 5 Stars

Thank God for Bear for originally recording this and for finally allowing this to be released (I know he has some problems with how it came out--but I'm really glad it's come out!).
This is a really cool recording of a band that influenced a heckuva lot of people, and the concert songs are really good (though I agree with Bear the Gram demos didn't need to be on here, but they're interesting).
If you like good mix of traditional bakersfield country with Dead-like rock'n'roll, you should definitely check this out.

Free Music Review: Rare Gram Parsons live recording
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a rare recently-discovered recording of two 1969 shows at the Avalon Ballroom (discovered in the
Grateful Dead archives). Live recordings of Parsons are rare and this one indicates the breadth of material he
covered along with introductions of songs and banter. It's like taking a trip in a time machine. If only there
were film or videotape of this performance! Kudos to Amoeba Records and the Grateful Dead archive owners
for making this disc available to the legions of Parsons fans.
