Free Music Review: Honky Tonkin with the Flying Burritos
Hit: 4 Stars

Live at the Avalon Ballroom,1969,San Francisco, this makes for very interesting recording, hearing mostly the vocals standing out in front with Sneaky Pete and the band in the background which is right on the money especially with country music,so many times you hear a band in a nightclub and the band drowns out the vocals, but not in this case as you hear Parsons and Chris Hillman's harmonies clear as a bell as they wail on,Sin City or Dark End Of The Street, many people were complaining about the sound, but I'd say we're lucky to even hear this classic recording, and it isn't that bad for a nightclub recording consisting of maybe fifty people in the audience at the most, remember Parsons and the Burritos were virtually unknown at the time and if you want to hear a crappy recording listen to Ihe Beatles,Hamburg,Germany compilations, nothing but pure distortion,if there was one complaint about this Amoeba two disc cd,which consist of two different shows, the biggest complaint is the packaging, good lord !,I thought I was going have to use plyers just to pull the disc out, unbelievable, hopefully vol. 2 won't be the same, overall this piece of archives in music history is a must.

Free Music Review: Great music, horrible disc packaging!
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a great two disc set of Flying Burrito Brothers material (really a burritos comp not a Gram Parsons solo set) which is a valuable addition to their small but important catalog. Amoeba did a great job with this release, nice photos and a fascinating essay on how hard it was to get these tapes released from the Dead's archives. I do really hate the packaging of the discs as they're almost impossible to get out of the paper pouches without tearing the packaging or scuffing the discs. It's even made me listen to the discs less than i would have just because it's such a chore. For me the disc's highlights are "sweet mental revenge" and a devastating "$1,000" wedding performed solo by Parsons. Great music, a wonderful find. Fans of Gram and the burritos should also check out Dillard & Clark or some solo Gene Clark, an equally towering figure in the country/rock genre. The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark/Through the Morning, Through the Night

Free Music Review: Maybe Not God's Own Singer, But Certainly Mine
Hit: 4 Stars

Much of what I was going to say is in Rockman's review, so I won't repeat it in detail except to agree wholeheartedly that this was a band, not a solo project. This has sonic and performance flaws-- I wonder if the original tapes were "locked" and couldn't be mixed further. And the quality of the performances is uneven--as my partner the Born Band Chick has, with her usual astute musical perception, pointed out, Gram was particularly hard to harmonize with, his voice was all over the lot, and no one really matched him perfectly until Emmylou. The performances are authentic, but far from perfect.

There is focus today on Gram's vision and influence, and this is to be expected nearly forty years later. But this CD, like the Fallen Angels tour CD that has been released a couple of times, reminds us that Gram was among the best singers our generation has produced, and, for my money, among the very best singers of sad songs.

Free Music Review: Well worth the wait!!
Hit: 4 Stars

Like everything Gram Parsons and The Flying Burrito Brothers did, this live 2 CD set of tunes will remind fans why they loved these guys in the first place! Thanks to Amoeba records and Dave Prinz for pursuing these "lost" tapes of the band.

Both shows captured on this set are well worth the listen, but I prefer the April 4th set a bit more for some beautiful and heartbreaking takes of "She Once Lived Here" "Hot Burrito #1" "Dark End of the Street" and "Sin City" sung by Gram, and backed up by Chris Hillman. There's a somewhat funky, jazzy version of "Hot Burrito #2" and great covers of Little Richard's "Lucille" and "Sweet Mental Revenge" (Waylon Jenning's tune). One weaker track is the second set's "Do Right Woman" - not one of their best performances for sure. ....Overall an excellent addition. ...Hey Amoeba, got any more stuff?! Enjoy.

Free Music Review: could have been better
Hit: 4 Stars

There's good and bad about this cd.First, it was the Flying Burrito Bros, not Gram Parsons and... the GP hype on this is way over the top. In addition, there's no Burrito photo on the front cover, and the one pathetic photo they do have inside has the wrong Burrito lineup pictured( Mike Clarke is missing,an inexcusable mistake!!.In fact reading the booklet, one wouldn't even know it's the Burritos and not just GP! Both sets are inexplicitly cut, when there was room for both complete sets. There some unneeded lame GP demos on disc one. On the positive side, the sound quality is great. Not a bad set, but could have been a whole lot better.
