Free Music Review: Grohl Continues His Ascent To Legendary Status
Hit: 5 Stars

I never paid much attention to the Foo Fighters until earlier this year. In June 2005 they released "In Your Honor," their fifth studio album which peaked at No.2 in both the US and the UK, becoming the biggest album in terms of first-week sales of the band's career. The Foo Fighters always seemed a little too heavy for me, but I went along and bought the album anyway and have ended up absolutely loving it! The fact that this album contains two discs is also great, because you get 21 songs for the price of a normal CD. It's a concept album of sorts, with the first disc focusing on the 'loud' stuff and the second disc focused on the 'not so loud' songs - in other words, one rock, one soft rock. The idea works very well, and even though I found it daunting trying to listen to 21 songs by a band I was never really interested in, the results have been rewarding and I now consider this album one of 2005's best releases.

The album opens with the title track, "In Your Honor." This is a great introductory song, it starts off distant and epic, before getting closer and breaking free with a crazy chorus. The lyrics are profound and seem to build up towards something: the rest of this mammoth album. "No Way Back" is one of my favourite songs. It has a very funky guitar solo and the rip will really stick in your head! The lyrics are pretty cool, and the way they are composed is very catchy. The album's first single, "Best Of You," is a very powerful piece of rock, both sonically and emotionally. Grohl's vocals are brilliant as they usually are, and the chorus is so catchy, the verses almost idyllic. "DOA" was the second single from the album, and is another really brilliant song. The verses are very catchy and the guitars are hyper. The drum work in this song impresses me inparticular. "Hell" is a short song that is followed by the superb "The Last Song." This song is superb, and the way the vocals mould brilliantly around Grohl's voice at the start is always a delight. The drum work is very prominent too.

"Free Me" is perhaps my favourite song on the album, it's just so crazy! The guitar work in this song's chorus is absolutely mental, and I adore it with a passion! Grohl's vocals are also incredibly powerful in the middle of the song. "Resolve" sounds more like old Foo Fighters, with a heavier sound and some brilliant guitar work. The lyrics are pretty cool too. "The Deepest Blues Are Black" is another good song, but not one of my favourites. "End Over End" is pretty much the same as the last song, because it only just succeeds in making me remember it. It's not a brilliant song, but then I suppose it's not a bad one either. I also think this song is too long, at just under six minutes in length. The first disc closes with "The Sign." This is thankfully a better song, and the guitar work is so evocative in the verses. I find this a very powerful song, quite Nirvana-ish yet still unique.

The second disc opens with the beautiful "Still." It takes quite a bit for this song to really get going, but once it does you can relax and let this song take you away. The vocals are beautiful, as are the lyrics, while the whole atmosphere that this song creates is one of wisdom and seriousness. "What If I Do?" is probably the best song on this second disc. It's very clever and well-arranged, I love the chorus and especially the repetition of "Carolina!" after the third minute. Grohl clearly knows how to construct a song properly. "Miracle" is another brilliant song with a catchy chorus that will stick in your head for quite some time - believe me, it gets quite annoying when you can't get it out of your head! "Another Round" is quite suggestive if you have a dirty mind, but other than that it's another really great song! "Friend Of A Friend" was written by Grohl some 15 years ago, and is a song about his new friends at the time, Cobain and Novoselic. People are interested in this song just because it's about Kurt Cobain and Grohl's perspective of him from way back when, but it's actually a really brilliant song that reminds me of Nirvana's "Polly" or "Dumb."

"Over And Out" is yet another brilliant song, it's quite epic and has a drum beat that rides along majestically like a horse. The lyrics are really cool and tell a story of searching for someone that you can no longer find: pretty heartbreaking at times. "On The Mend" is another pretty cool song where the guitar is light and wistful, dominating above everything else. It isn't the strongest song here, but it still holds up against the rest. "Virginia Moon" is one of my favourites, because it features Norah Jones on guest vocals, and she complements Grohl's rough and sexy voice perfectly. The song itself is very old-style and classic-sounding, and would fit in well on one of Norah's albums because the piano that she plays is just all her own! "Cold Day In The Sun" is a good song but not one of my favourites, because it sounds a bit loud for this not so loud disc! I feel that it kind of ruins the tone a bit, but not to worry, because the album closes with "Razor," which is a stunning song. The guitar work on this song is evocative, and pretty much razor-sharp when you first hear it. It kind of creeps up behind you, and trots out perfectly.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

I didn't expect to love this album from the Foo Fighters so much, so I've been very surprised and delighted. I definitely see myself purchasing more albums from the band in the next few months. I'd also like to express my disappointment at Sony, and the disgusting way they have treated fans of the band and loyal music buyers by installing all that junk on your hard drive once you put this album in your computer. However, I'm reviewing the music, so I haven't let that detract from my opinion of the actual music like some others have. Plus, my copy of the album seemed to copy fine to my computer - maybe the UK version is different to the US one, who knows. I definitely recommend this album to anyone interested in one of the best rock albums of the year. Probably one of the most consistent albums I've heard in a long time.

In Your Honor Poster

One of the biggest and most important rock bands in the world releases this long out of print vinyl.
It?s likely that a decade after its debut record this band now has fans who might ask, "You mean Dave Grohl was in a band before the Foo Fighters?" But they, or any Foo followers who pine for the increasingly refined vocals and polished pop-punk uniformity of the first four albums, will swallow this one whole--or at least half. For as much as vocalist/bandleader Grohl and Co. mix a similar concoction on the 20-song double CD, they manage to agitate the formula ever so slightly. Disc one follows the Foo?s classic sonic blueprint: lip-smacking melodies and enigmatic lyrics, double-barrel guitars and drums that attack. But songs take a gentle turn on the second CD, showcasing Grohl?s underrated vocals amidst a high-energy ensemble of acoustic guitars, piano and mandolin (by studio guest John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin). Singing, not shouting, Grohl flips potential teen-rock anthems like "Miracle" and "Cold Day in the Sun" (with drummer Taylor Hawkins handling lead vocals) into impending adult-oriented radio staples and, 11 years after Nirvana, the Foo Fighters may finally have their triumph. --Scott Holter
