Free Music Review: Foo's Best...And A Near Classic To Boot
Hit: 5 Stars

In the realm of current or recent rock, post-Nirvana, it would be hard for this reviewer to grab the banner of a band, any band, hold it aloft, and proclaim "THIS is worthy." I mean, really, who comes to mind? R.E.M and U2 play out the string with competent, occasionally interesting albums. Springsteen now shills for a major political party. Any more, it's not so much a matter of Who's Next? as it is Who's Left?, or perhaps Who Hasn't Dissolved After Three Releases? It's a grim landscape for those of us who grew up in The Era Of Rock Music...with Rap ascendant and Eminem the modern day equivalent of the Beatles or Stones. Almost intolerable...

...but for The Foo.

There Is Nothing Left to Lose, the band's third LP, displays about everything one could -- and does -- want in a rock 'n roll album. A mix of harder and softer, of faster and slower, of varied sounds and textures. Oh, and riffs. LOTS of riffs. Riffs and melodic bits that don't take more than two or three listenings to engrave themselves in the ear and the brain. And then lastly, a set of songs so strong that at various times each are called personal favorites, the lyrics learned by heart and played over and over again just for the thrill of being able to do it.

Nothing Left is bookended by songs that cover all of the above. "Stacked Actors", possibly a homage to Kari Wuhrer, Winona Ryder, or even Miss Courtney herself, begins with a memorable riff, falls into some ersatz lounge jazz, and then goes back hard to the master riff. "M I A," inviting the ghost of Sugar-y drone rock in for some scotch, caps the album with decisive finality, as Grohl intones "red, red, laced around your head, cold and rescued." Is it another girly? Is it Kurt on the floor? Is it David himself? In the end, it doesn't matter, because drummer Taylor Hawkins and bassist Nate Mendel get locked into such a fierce groove that the words settle for runnerup.

In between you will find the very best of Foo, on top of their games, confidently trying and succeeding at about everything. "Generator" pays homage to the envelope follower voice guitar distorter and is the album's most fun track, with "Live In Skin" maybe its scariest and closest to out of control, as DG wails "I'm amounted" like a man in the throes of self-loathing. "Aurora" is all quiet introspection, save for another killer riff in the chorus courtesy Nate, while "Gimme Stitches" swaggers with the bravado of vintage Mick/Keith. Almost lost in all the greatness is the band's sort-of radio hit "Learn To Fly", a must-have for any classic rock collection.

The musicianship is superb. Grohl is right (and has a right to be, let's face it) when he calls Taylor Hawkins the best drummer he's ever heard. Dave himself maintains guitar duties that are short on flash, long on substance, perfectly complimenting the inventiveness of Mendel's bass work. And Grohl's singing continues to be a revelation, practically making one gasp in awe as to how high the Kurt-Krist-Dave aircraft could have flown with more vocal contributions from the latter. Beyond Pluto, is maybe where...

In short and in sum, this album is more than just solid, more than just better than the first two Foo releases...even more than just their best album, period. It is within shouting distance of the very best rock and roll albums ever made.

There Is Nothing Left to Lose Poster

One of the biggest and most important rock bands in the world releases this long out of print vinyl.
Riding the momentum of the hit single "Learn to Fly," which hit No. 1 on the modern-rock charts long before this album's release, the Foo Fighters' third record is unarguably its most refined and poppy. The ominous riff that the opens "Stacked Actors" (which sounds like something Kurt Cobain could have hacked out on Nirvana's gnarly In Utero) is pretty much a red herring. The 10 tunes that follow are a succession of hook-laden pop songs tarted up with guitarist-vocalist (and former Nirvana drummer) Dave Grohl's thick guitars and increasingly sugar-sweet vocals. Nearly every cut on There Is Nothing Left to Lose has the potential of following "Learn to Fly" up the charts. The production is big and friendly and songs like "Generator," "Aurora," and "Headwires" just melt in your mouth. And even though the Foo Fighters' latest is seductively sweet in sound, there are just enough rough edges and lyrical angst to keep things interesting. --Adem Tepedelen
