Free Music Review: Double Vision

Foreigner's second album is definitely a step down from their first. To this day, 30 years later, I'm still debating if this is a 4 star album or a 3 star album. Double Vision went to #3 on the charts which was one spot higher than their debut album. It had three hit singles (just like the first album); "Double Vision" got to #2 on the charts, "Hot Blooded" went to #3 on the charts & "Blue Morning, Blue Day" made it to #15. So, in every way, by the numbers, they come up pretty much equal. The difference is that Double Vision isn't as consistent, where Foreigner didn't have a bad song, Double Vision has a couple that are below average.
The album opens with "Hot Blooded" which is one of their best songs. As far as hits go, Foreigner really hit their stride on this album. "Blue Morning, Blue Day" follows & is a song I never cared for very much. "You're All I Am" is another average song but better than the previous one. "Back Where You Belong" puts the album back on track. But we're back to average with "Love Has Taken It's Toll". "Double Vision" was an outstanding single, one of their very best songs, even the lyrics accurately speak of what many of us have done. "Tramontane" is an instrumental, synth laden, heavy beats, one of my all-time favorite Foreigner songs. "I Have Waited So Long" is disappointing, even the vocals by Lou Graham leave something to be desired. "Lonely Children" is a hard rocking song with a great vocal by Graham. Graham & Mick Jones, the main lyricists for the group, sometimes struggle writing good lyrics. "Lonely Children" is an exception, it's one set of lyrics that Jones should be very proud of. "Spellbinder" is another good song, one of their better album tracks.
Two bonus tracks have been added to the original album. The first is a live version of "Hot Blooded". I've never been overjoyed by live versions of songs, in most cases it sounds like they're in a hurry to get it over with. This is no exception. The last one is a live version of "Love Maker" which has an R & B flavor to it. This is the last album recorded with the original lineup of Graham, Jones, McDonald, Greenwood, Elliott & Gagliardi. With the next album, Head Games, some major personnel changes would occur; these changes probably hurt the group.
