Free Music Review: A Genious Man at Work
Hit: 5 Stars

All I can say is wow. The album left me totally speechless. And to all those that are just learning about the Rising Tide and Fort Minor, where have you been? I've heard about the Rising Tide long before it even came out. Fort Minor wasn't even popular until long after the start of 2006. The songs that started to make them "popular" is Petrified, Remember the Name, and the very famous taking over the charts, Where'd You Go featuring the wonderful Holly Brook. Without them I doubt anyone would know about them, unless they are fans of Linkin Park and follow them as much as I do. And to those that think that Fort Minor is Shinoda's top priority they are wrong. This is a side project with the members from Styles of Beyond, Ryu, Takbir, and Cheapshot, three of his friends. Also other people helped out as well. It had always been Shinoda's thing to do hip hop, but Linkin Park is also like his home.

Anyway reviewing the Fort Minor's debut album Rising Tide. Perfection is impossible it is said, and I quite agree. Though this alubm has to be one of the best I've seen...ever. And I am not saying this because I am a huge fan of the rapper/keyboardest/singer/songwriter Mike Shinoda of the band Linkin Park. I am saying this because each song has a meaning to it if you look deeper. I give props to Shinoda for writing every single track. You don't see that much anymore, that's why song writers are hired, but Shinoda is original.

Into: A simple intro to the Rising Tide. Nothing special about this, but it does introduce Fort Minor with Jay-Z saying his opinion and thoughts about Fort Minor and its album. I think it has served its purpose for the first track of the CD.

Remember the Name: The actual first song on the Rising Tide Album. It is talking about each member of Fort Minor, well at least with Shinoda, Ryu, and Takbir.

Right Now: A really well written song. It is talking about the "bad" things like poor people. It is from the point of view of a guy (Shinoda let's say) in a hotel room, and he's looking outside to see what is going on. He is wondering what it would be like to be them. The chorus is saying like how he is saying what it'll be like when he gets back, because honestly and truly everything changes just like that.

Petfrified: Is about Shinoda's outlook on people being petrified, or shocked if you will at people's reactions. This is a good song with a good beat. This features Tak and Ryu

Feel Like Home: One of the best songs on the track word wise. About people having nowhere to go in a sense, and it is about (Shinoda) being there walking home when it is freezing. Then Ryu and Tak add their things like (Tak) leaving his girl and about people sleeping in the rain.

Where'd You Go?: The song that is sweeping the charts. On American Top 40 it holds number two. This beats everything else in meaning. This is different than other songs, and I kind of compare this to Linkin Park's My December. My December is about the group being away from home, and how they miss it. It talks about their homes. Where'd You Go? whereas is about someone in their family being gone. It is indeed original, and Shinoda writes it in dedication to his wife. The beat is simple, and has Holly Brook playing the piano and the vocals.

In Stereo: Okay, I know I lied. This song doesn't have much meaning at all besides putting a new cd in a stereo. Good beat though it is a fun song to listen to.

Back Home: Thoughts are back at home in this song, another one doing with homes. Don't know how he does it but it is good.

Cigarettes: Now when I first heard this song I thought Shinoda was promotting cigarettes. Well don't worry folks he isn't. If you look at the lyrics, or listen to the song carefully you'll see what it is really about. Shinoda is comparing the cigarette company to the hip hop industry. How I'm not going to say, it's fun to figure out on your own.

Believe Me: One of the "higher pitced" songs. Shinoda should stick to rapping is my opinion, he doesn't go high very good. But it is a great song nevertheless just like the rest of them. This one is about telling someone that they don't have to believe them, and that they are on their own.

Get Me Gone: Sometimes the best songs are short, sweet, and get to the point. Like this for example it is getting at people who twist Shinoda's words in interviews and talking about first grade vocabulary. It is amusing at the end to, worth the listen though it is pointless. Though it does have a meaning.

High Road: One of my favorite songs to listen to. This is about people saying that working with Jay-Z was a "fluke" but personally I thought it was great. All Jay had to do was listen ot the tracks once and he said that they were great. I would say Shinoda's letting off some steam in some sense in this song.

Kenji: This is about a man Kenji who lived in America during WWII and he's a japaneese person. He is a simple man who works hard for what he gets. Shinoda paints the scene using his words and talks about the normal routine with his family until it changes. As the song progresses you learn that Kenji is a man from his family (I assume his dad). I knew that this had to do with his family without hearing the song. Mike Kenji Shinoda is his full name (Michael if you want to be technical)

Red to Black: About a friend named Victor who's parents got divorced, then talks about how he drinks and what not and the results of it. Good guitar in the beginning, about the only guitar you hear at all on this album.

The Battle: Yet another short and sweet song that gets to the point. Literatly this song is short. It's less than a minute but still has meaning. It raps about complex things (simple to some)about hungry children, bringing the troops back and babies with crack in them.

Slip out the Back: This is the only song I haven't figured out the meaning to, but it is a good listen.

Overall these songs are great, they are each unique, none of them repeat things over. I am giving this a 10/10

Rising Tied Poster

Fort Minor, the side project and solo debut for Mike Shinoda of multiplatinum, Grammy-winning Linkin Park, returns the emcee to his roots-making hip-hop. The Rising Tied, produced by Shinoda, who wrote every track and played nearly every instrument was executive produced by Jay-Z. Featuring guest appearances from Common, the Roots Black Thought, John Legend, Linkin Park DJ Joe Hahn, alt-funk rocker Kenna and two acts signed to Linkin Park's Machine Shop Recordings, Style of Beyond and Holly Brook, The Rising Tied raises the standard for unique, unadulterated hip-hop.
Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda steps out for a wall-to-wall hip-hop project on which he faces his critics ("High Road"), gets autobiographical ("Remember the Name"), shares family history ("Kenji") and emerges as a hip-hop reformist ("Cigarette"). Standing shoulder to shoulder with, among others, John Legend, members of The Roots and Styles of Beyond, The Rising Tied shines brightest in its earliest moments, where the beats and rhymes feel and sound freshest and where the positive message feels most sincere. A limited edition includes two documentary footage that follows the album's evolution, and Shinoda during the making of the video for "Petrified," all of which ultimately provides fans with interesting insights into the album and the artist himself. -?Jedd Beaudoin
