This jazz dance music keeps my spirits up and my toes tapping. I was delighted to introduce my 15 year old granddaughter to this Fosse music. She loves it.

Free Music Review: A Good Album, But Somewhat Lacking
Hit: 4 Stars

Living in a rural area on the West Coast, it is difficult to see most of the shows that run on Broadway. The Cast Albums are the way many of us experience shows.

I imagine it is difficult to get the full Fosse experience simply from listening to the album. Let's face it: the revue is dance-based. Much like "Jerome Robbins' Broadway" of the late 1980's, the album is not going to provide most of the show.

However, I enjoyed this album very much. Hearing the opening strains of Valarie Pettiford singing "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries" to one of the livliest versions of "Sing, Sing, Sing" I have heard in a while, the music is all there for the most part.

The only thing I miss are the numbers from "Cabaret" or "Damn Yankees," but I suppose those were left out due to the new Broadway cast recordings of those shows ("Cabaret" in 1998 and "Damn Yankees" in 1994). Curiously though, the "Chicago" numbers turn up on this album.

This recording introduced me to Jane Lanier, and I have grown into a fan of hers. Her singing is sublime, and I can only imagine what she looks like doing those Fosse-esque dances onstage.

One complaint: there is a lot of orchestral stuff that doesn't translate well without seeing the dancing. I call it the "Noise/Funk" syndrome. "Noise/Funk" was a WONDERFUL show to see, but it simply didn't translate to the album.

Overall: singing is wonderful. Music is there. The album is awful heavy on instrumentals, but in such cases as "Crunchy Granola Suite," they are a welcome edition.
