Free Music Notes for Fosse (1999 Original Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: Close your eyes and let it take you away
Hit: 4 Stars

As a stand alone recording, Fosse: A Celebration in Song and Dance would appear quite week without the visual aspect of the show. Unlike other Original Broadway Cast Recordings, the music selections here neither make the story progress - as there is none - nor translate the essence of the show.

However, if you have seen the show, you will smile widely while listening to the recording. Jane Lanier, Michael Paternostro and Alex Sanchez (Steam Heat) transpose quite well on CD, and so does Big Spender and Mr. Bojangles. But nothing compares to the dazzling rendition of the "Big Deal" classic, Life's a Bowl of Cherries, performed by the stellar, beautiful, talented and gracious Valarie Pettiford, who, with this performance may have failed to snag a Tony, but solidified the strong hold she has on her fan's admiration and won the heart of a new generation of spectators who had yet to discover the wonder that is Ms. Pettiford.

Free Music Review: Excellent Recording...but where's "Mein Herr"?
Hit: 4 Stars

This is one of the most impressive cast recordings I've purchased in quite a while. It truly captures the spirit of this wonderful, magical production. My only complaint would be, however, that it does not include "Mein Herr"; what I would consider to be one of the principal highlights of the show. It's truly remarkable that a production which is so focused on dance and choreography has a cast that is also so very musically and vocally talented. "Mr. Bojangles" is awesome. "Big Spender", "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Steam Heat" are also highly enjoyable. Recommended!

Free Music Review: THE STRUT. THE STYLE. THE SIGNATURE OF BOB FOSSE.
Hit: 4 Stars

After seeing this production at the Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles in fall 1998, this sexy show is finally on recording for many years to come. Fosse is an exploration of one of the most fascinating and complex personalities in the American theatre through his extraordinary, ground-breaking choreography. The show includes unfogettable dancing from film and stage including Cabaret, Chicago, Sweet Charity, All That Jazz, Pippin, Dancin', Big Deal and many more. This dance revue is destined for a Tony nomination for Best Musical 1999.

Free Music Review: Very good, but it pales in comparison to the show
Hit: 4 Stars

While this CD showcases some of the great music from the show, it left out quite a few of the most popular and better done songs. The show is fabulous, and cannot be judged by the CD. Most of the songs are wonderfully orchestrated, and well sung(I Gotcha, Big Spender, Bye Bye Blackbird), but several of the showstoppers(Mein Herr) were omitted. Overall it is a good CD, but could've been much better. I definately reccomend it, but I would rather pay my 80$ to see the show.

Free Music Review: GREAT SHOW, GOOD CD
Hit: 4 Stars

True, some of numbers that made the show such a joy were not included in the CD, but what is here more than makes up for it. Some of these songs have never been recorded in these arrangements, some never even recorded before. Having been witness to the show at its world premiere in Toronto, I can honestly say the show has grown and the CD is testament to that fact. Listen with an open mind, and you won't be disappointed.
