Free Music Review: Settle in to a great song writer

What a growth curve Mr. Black has been on. He went from heading a seminal punk-grunge band, the Pixies, to slowly evolving into a rootsy, incredible writer of slightly wonderful offbeat Americana songs.
And he keeps getting better. This move of his to Honeycomb I wasn't quite sure about. Too mellow, not quite there yet with this band. Not as good of mixes, I thought. Add, however, some friends from his earlier days and a cast of big names like Levon Helm, Al Kooper, etc and Fast Man Raider Man is a masterpiece.
To me it's not that far from sounding like his Dog in the Sand and Show Me your Tears stages, with just a lot more depth, it seems, with the addition of so many quality musicians.
The bottom line is Frank Black is a bonafide great American Songwriter who loves doing it, loves getting better, and continues to crank out great American rock and roll. Such songs as Sad Old World and If the Poison Gets you, to name just a couple, stand head and shoulders with anything in his catalog.
Fast Man Raider Man might well be his finest hour so far.
