Free Music Notes for Guys & Dolls: A Decca Broadway Original Cast Recording (1950 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: One of the greats Hit: 5 Stars
Guys and Dolls is one of the the greatest of all Broadway musicals, and this recording is the best evidence of why that's so. Starting with the classic Damon Runyon stories, Frank Loesser wrote songs that really suited these characters, and the performances on this recording bring these characters to life in a way that contemporary revivials don't.
The show is full of really great songs that have become standards- songs like "Luck Be a Lady"- and outstanding scenes and performances from start to finish. Stubby Kaye's "Get Down, You're Rocking the Boat" is one of the great show stoppers of all time. I never had the chance to see the show on Broadway- I was born quite a few years too late- but listening to this recording I can close my eyes and watch the show play out in my imagination.
Free Music Review: Broadway as it should be Hit: 5 Stars
This cd is a superbly remastered special edition of the original GUYS AND DOLLS Broadway soundtrack. I purchased it because I am going to see the latest revival on Broadway and wanted to familiarize myself with the songs as I have never seen the show before.
The orchestration and style is a little dated but it only adds to the glorious brilliance of the performances. Through these songs you get to know each of the four main characters very closely and the performances are unbelievable. The liner notes are full of valuable info with some great pictures as well.
I am so happy I purchased this for I love musicals and this soundtrack is a must have that shows how a show should be done. It also fills me with great expectation to see the show in New York.
Free Music Review: Original cast great- movie soundtrack add-ons are awful Hit: 5 Stars
You've got to give five stars to this CD of the original cast recording. It's one of the most musical of the classic broadway musicals, and one of the few that's truly American in its character. Loesser is at his best here. The sound quality is from the fifties but the performance quality more than compmensates. But I'd give anything to be able to erase the movie sound track cuts which the CD producers included to fill out the disc. Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons are miscast as musical artists and their reditions are simply awful. Keep your remote handy and change to the next CD when the last chords of the original cast fade out.
Free Music Review: Nothing beats the original Hit: 5 Stars
Stereo it's not, but it's the real thing. Listening to the Original Broadway production brought back all the joy I had when I first heard all those memorable tunes. The CD has cuts from the movie version, but they pale in comparison with the performance and voices of Robert Alda, Vivian Blaine and Sam Lavene. No one could reproduce the humor and power of Vivian's "Adelaid's Lament" or "Take Back Your Mink", or Stubby Kaye's "Guys and Dolls". All was as I remembered; a thoroughly enjoyable classic.
Free Music Review: Desert Island Disc Hit: 5 Stars
This Broadway version of Guys and Dolls sparkles. What makes it special is the singing of Stubby Kaye and Vivian Blaine, who were also in the film version. The film version was recently reissued on video and DVD and should be grabbed up quickly, since for some strange reason musicals have a short shelf life. Why the movie version soundtrack has not been released is anybody's guess. I hope it comes out soon. Oh yes, the 1992 new Broadway version starring Pete Gallagher and Nathan Lane is quite wonderful. Get them both!
