Free Music Notes for Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos JobimFree Music Review: A remarkable collaboration Hit: 5 StarsTen songs, ten perfect reasons to love this work. Each gentleman obviously had a fecund career of his own; yet, this effort represents a singular achievement in its own right. Too often when two legends come together they remain too much within their own realms of comfort (or ego) to make the effort genuinely worthwhile. Not so here. Both were willing to make concessions, forfeit a little of his own persona and adopt some of the other's in order to create a unique and extraordinary album. In fact, there are a couple instances it is difficult which one is singing, so seamless is their melding. Sinatra is at his sweetest and most plaintive. Jobim eases into American popular music effortlessly. The gorgeous orchestration by Claus Olgerman pulls together the production superbly. The result is a masterwork that sounds like neither a typical Sinatra album nor a typical Jobim album. The fifth track, "Meditation," summarizes these songs rather well: put on the CD, relax and lose yourself in this one.
Free Music Review: Sinatra at his best Hit: 5 StarsThis is great music sung by a great voice in his prime. It is soft, yet very sensual music. Sinatra and Jobim are quite a pairing!
Free Music Review: Simply marvelous Hit: 5 StarsWith all the booze and the broads ,mr tough guy comes out and throws everybody for a loop(well, maybe not everybody) with a quiet, sensitive masterpiece."Once I Loved" is absolutely spellbinding and along with a fabulous Jobim, here we have one of ole blue eyes best.To all you tough guys out there, you`re not so tough.
Free Music Review: Simply Beautiful Hit: 5 StarsMusical tastes and preferences are strange. It seems you either like something or you don't. If you like Frank Sinatra's voice at any stage of his long career you will want to listen to this recording. He is quiet and sexy ... like a sea breeze on a cool night. There is some criticism that Jobim is not featured as significantly as he should be, but he penned most of the music (7 of the 10 songs). The Ogerman arrangements are near perfection. This was a significant addition to my Sinatra collection. I've found that even after many plays (I've listened to it about 10 times so far) the music remains interesting and engaging.
Free Music Review: It whispers music to the weary spirit Hit: 5 StarsI purchased this album because the author (and Sinatra aficionado) Pete Hamill claimed in his book "Why Sinatra Matters" that it was one of Sinatra's best. Nevertheless I was skeptical because quite often a record producer or performer will get the idea that creating a `super group' or pairing two very talented musicians will create a record that is even greater than the sum of its parts. That usually doesn't happen. The usual result is one in which each `diva' takes a turn showcasing his or her talents. "Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim" is a rare and very pleasant exception. Although not a 50-50 blend, this album really showcases Sinatra performing the great Jobim's music, the result is virtually flawless.
Sinatra & Jobim was released in the U.S. in 1967 during the height of Brasil's bossa nova invasion. Performers such as Jobim, Joao Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto, enjoyed tremendous influence on U.S. pop music and jazz. Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Ella Fitzgerald and others all absorbed or collaborated in the bossa nova boom. This album and the later "Sinatra and Company" mark Sinatra's footprint in the bossa nova genre.
The CD opens with an excellent cover of The Girl from Ipanema with Sinatra taking verses in English and Jobim in Portuguese. As others have noted, Sinatra's voice is quiet to the point of whispering. Those used to swing era Sinatra and his other full throttle vocals may find is quiet, spare renditions different to say the least. It happens to work in the context of this and other tracks such as Dindi, Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars and Meditation. Sinatra always had a great feel for interpreting a song and I think his approach to Jobim's songs is dead solid perfect. Similarly, the three non-Jobim songs arranged by the very talented Claus Ogerman, "Change Partners", "I Concentrate on You", and "Baubles, Bangles and Beads", fit in nicely with Jobim's in terms of the mood and the music.
All in all this is an excellent CD and is one that I often turn to when I want music to whisper to me instead of shout. Highly recommended.
