Free Music Review: The Legendary Ol' Blue Eyes Sings Antonio Carlos Jobim's Songs
Hit: 5 Stars

The legendary Ol' Blue Eyes sings the Bossa Nova icon's compositions and does more than justice to his songs. His interpretations are awesomely beautiful and incredibly enchanting. He covers these songs with utmost confidence considering that these songs are not his normal repertoire. In my opinion, this is one of Sinatra's finest albums ever recorded. With A.C. Jobim and one of my favorite conductors/arrangers, Claus Ogerman in the picture, what more can you ask for?

On the opening track, Jobim shares the spotlight with Sinatra on a duet, "The Girl From Ipanema" covering the Portuguese lyrics of this beautiful classic and in my opinion, the most famous of all his compositions. I love his music and have collected a few of his earliest albums. He was one of the few creative musicians who composed, sung, played the piano and guitar. He collaborated with Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto, to name a few, and has created wonderful and lovable melodies that are so appealing and pleasing even to the most discriminating ears. Many think of him as Brazil's answer to America's George Gershwin.

Only three out of the ten tracks are non-Jobim compositions, Irving Berlin's "Change Partners," Cole Porter's "I Concentrate On You" and Wright/Forrest/Borodine's "Baubles, Bangles And Beads."

My favorites? They're my all-time favorites, but I picked out one lovely song as follows:

"Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars"
Words & Music by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Gene Lees

"Quiet nights of quiet stars
Quiet chords from your guitar
Floating on the silence that surrounds us

Quiet thoughts and quiet dreams
Quiet walks by quiet streams
And the window looking on the mountains and the sea
How lovely."

I'm not whining about it, but I wish there were a lot more selections included, some of the more famous Jobim staples such as "Wave," "One Note Samba" and "Desafinado." This is one magnificent CD to complement your Sinatra and Jobim collections. It so deserves to be in your music library.

Free Music Review: Another One of Sinatra's "Homework" Albums
Hit: 5 Stars

Nobody who listens to this could possibly doubt Sinatra's stature as one of the greatest vocalists of the twentieth century. This entire record is a vocal clinic. Sinatra's breath control, inflection, and mood are perfectly suited for his interpretations. It is clear that he had been studying Jobim for some time before embarking on this project. Song selection is terrific, and flows naturally. This music somehow has that "1960's" lounge feel, without sounding anachronistic, although it walks the edge at times. It still sounds terrific, and blows most of what passes for "smooth jazz" today out of the water.

Another Sinatra benchmark.

Free Music Review: Sinatra And Jobim 'The Voice Meets Bossa Nova'
Hit: 5 Stars

This is one of my favorite Sinatra cds. So what do I say about it. First of all I love the song selection. All the songs seem to blend in very well together. And this gives the cd a oneless thats a pleasure to listen to. Sinatra sings each song softy and very tenderly and the arrangements by Mr. Ogerman follow the same pattern. And lets not forget the guitar playing of Mr. Jobim himshelf. All three Sinatra, Jobim and Ogerman are in top form.So the next time you prepare a romantic dinner for two. Here's what you should do. 1. Prepare the food 2. Light the candles 3. Pour the wine 4. Put on this wonderful cd. And let nature take its course. P.S. The first song I would start playing on this cd to get the evening going is 'I Concentrate On You'.

Free Music Review: Smoooooooooth
Hit: 5 Stars

What happens when two geniuses get together..one the Father of Bossa Nova and the other The Voice? This understated little gem is achingly gorgeous and pleasingly bracing...and it all goes down smoother than silk. Frank Sinatra adds his unerring sense of phrasing and rhythm to the brilliant compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim and the results are a jazzy masterpiece. Frank has never sounded more romantic than he does on "Dindi," "Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars," and "Once I Loved," and he captures the simmering intensity of "I Concentrate on You" with aplomb. "If You Never Come to Me" is a vocal primer from the master. Jobim's lyrics and melodies have a heartbreaking pathos that informs every note and sound...Frank captures it perfectly. Sinatra's pathos is never bathos, but is the picture of a strong man with a hole in his heart. The only flaw that this CD has is that it ends all too soon. Give this one a spin, and your cool quotient will rise geometrically.

Free Music Review: Genius
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is a standout even by Sinatra's own highest majestic standards. It epitomizes elegance, romance, class and masculine feeling. More than anything or anybody, Sinatra proves in this album the sublime eloquence of understatement. There is no better music for a romantic dinner or a quiet drink than this album. There also is no better or more convincing interpreter of the magnificent Jobim songbook. I would rank this album as among the very top of Sinatra's work right up there with "Only the Lonely", "Swinging Lovers", "Wee Small Hours", and "September of my Years". It is an absolute must for any jazz or vocal music lover.
