Free Music Notes for Moonlight Sinatra
Free Music Review: one of my favorite Sinatra LPs of the 1960s

MOONLIGHT SINATRA (witty title) has Frank still (1966) in great voice - like SEPTEMBER OF MY YEARS of the previous year. Beautiful cover art, too!
Some thoughts on (most of) the songs:
1. "Moonlight Becomes You" - Riddle's setting shapes Sinatra's impassioned take. Perfect.
2. "Moon Song" - Torme's recording was playful. Sinatra's is serious, authoritative and earnest.
3. "Moonlight Serenade" - very slow, patient and relaxed. Sinatra's entrances are free.
5. "I Wished on the Moon" - Some slightly too-loud maracas on the right channel, but otherwise sweet and touching.
6. "Oh, You Crazy Moon" - a fab moderate swinger. Quirky harmonizations in the trombones in the bridge. Frank's beyond belief again, but you can practically hear the drummer breathe!
7. "The Moon Got In My Eyes" - Perfect in every respect.
8. "Moonlight Mood" - Charming piano/vocal intro leads to strings, woodwind highlights and harp flourishes.
9. "Moon Love" - One of many popular songs based upon classical tunes, this one borrowed from the 2nd movement of Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony (first theme only). Sinatra had previously recorded it with Harry James in 1939; that arrangement was in the original 3/4 meter and up-tempo. Riddle's is different. It does open with a 3/4 intro, but then quickly shifts to a very broad 4/4 common time for Sinatra's entrance and remains there in that meter for the duration. It's huge, glorious and sweepingly romantic, although now as a waltz-that-isn't, it can confuse; in fact, Sinatra seems a bit unsure of the meter coming back in after the bridge. That's a minor problem, though. A bigger one is the slightly cliched final cadence, the result of the songwriters' having clipped this bit of Tchaikovsky tune away from the second theme which had followed... I particularly like Riddle's use of glockenspiel with the violins during the bridge.
10. "The Moon Was Yellow" - Guitar and flute join with Riddle's orchestra for an intimate, Latin bossa-nova feel and it's perfect! Frank's relaxed vocal anticipates the following year's LP with Jobim.
