Free Music Review: A Look at the Civil War from all sides

I saw "The Civil War" on tour at the Bushnell in Hartford.As a person with some interest in the civil war and wars in general, I
was quite curious as to how the subject could be turned into a stage
play. Frank Wilhorn, et.al., through powerful, moving music and song
accomplished the task magnificently. The performance virtually brought
one to tears! After the show, the CD "The Complete Work"
was on sale in the lobby, and it was a must buy. Though my musical
tastes are rather eclectic, this was only the second or third purchase
for me of a "musical". I have to say though that upon
hearing the CD, I was a little disapointed, in that I felt the cast I
saw perform in Hartford did a better job with the material. (Perhaps
it's first-hearing bias). For one thing, some of the songs here are
performed by Country & Western "stars" rather than cast
members - to, in my view, the some of the songs' detriment - here they
become 'just another country song'. (I'll except Travis Tritt's
version of "The Day the Sun Stood Still" which is perhaps
even more powerful). Also, the cast songs lose something in the many
voices delivering a line here or there in a wide range of tones, the
touring stage show seemed smoother and more
intelligible. Mr. Schneider, who played the Confederate Lead in
Hartford, did a great job, as did Michael Lanning (heard here). Linda
Eder (who wasn't with the touring company), delivers a great job here,
with such powerful versions of her numbers from the show. I wish she'd
been in Hartford. The "colored" pieces presented here,
however lack the power of the touring cast. Even with all my
"criticisms" however, it was still a must purchase. If
you've seen the play, and perhaps even if you haven't, you'll love
this CD.
