Free Music Notes for One Size Fits All

Free Music Review: another brilliant album.
Hit: 5 Stars

released in 75, it still has the magic of 74 all over it. The quality of recording is top notch. Inca roads is the first track, and gets my vote as the best track. It's got a great solo which was culled from the 74 helsinki gig and edited brilliantly. The Ruthie playing is gorgeous, such a beautiful melody. George Duke's keyboard solo is another thing of beauty, and the vocals are done magically. The segue into can't afford no shoes is excellent. This is a wonderful little song. The bluesy guitar kinda reminds me of Led Zeppelin, but a lot more fun. Denny Walley plays great. And the end of this song, where you have the guys doing some frenzied playing and it stops with a thud...what great editing. The instrumental sofa #1 is very beautiful, especially this recording. Pojama people is a good song, with awesome interplay between zappa and duke. great solo. florentine pogen-another gorgeous song. And more wacky lyrics. evelyn a modified dog is a short, nice tune, i think it has some lumpy gravy references. san berdino a killer tune! johnny guitar watson sings his heart out. Andy is lovely, more johnny. It's a heck of a composition. Love it. Sofa #2 has german vocals. Great climax to another zappa triumph. Thank you

Free Music Review: Viva Zappa
Hit: 5 Stars

This, in my opinion, is the most cohesive Zappa album made.
It shines like a diamond, all the many facets of the Zappa Universe. Humor, guitar abuse, difficult time signatures, raucous and sublime vocals, stunning muscianship and general bizarre lyrics make this, still, after all these years, a joy to listen to.

My music teacher, waaay back then, listened to this and she said, "it seems like they were having fun with music", which I guess she meant to say that it was absolutely free and unconcerned with the current (disco) style-of-the-moment.

Behind all the hair, the sneer, the mustachio / imperial, the intolerance of inept band members, or live performances of his work....Frank was a playful type at heart. This album showed his full spectrum of colors.

Sorry to say, tho...after this he seemed to move on to juvenile, scatological humor and recordings (Sheik Yerbouti, Thing-Fish, You are What you Is...etc) which bothered me, but I remained a staunch Zappa fan regardless.

Cop this one...its legendary. It ranks as my fav Zappa CD...of course followed by Roxy n Elsewhere, Grand Wazoo, Make a Jazz Noise Here, and of course, Absolutely Free.

Free Music Review: A quirky blend of progressive, jazz-rock and the avant-garde
Hit: 5 Stars

This 1975 release by Frank Zappa can be fairly intense, yet is not without the levity that characterized most of his work. In fact, I found myself alternately laughing and scratching my head over some of the passages, which are extremely complex. One Size Fits All is a great album and I place it alongside Hot Rats (1969) as two of my favorites by Frank Zappa.

The tracks bring together aspects of jazz rock; blues/rock; the avant-garde; and progressive rock. Indeed, the opening track Inca Roads was featured on the Rhino progressive rock box set Supernatural Fairy Tales (1996). The musicianship is top flight throughout and features some of shining stars in jazz rock (Chester Thompson comes to mind). I should note that although this lineup was capable of extremely complex ensemble playing, they could really just cut loose and jam too. It is a nice contrast.

The sound quality of this release is very good and the CD booklet folds out to reveal the album (LP) art work. A nice package overall.

All in all, this is an excellent album by Frank Zappa and should appeal to those fans of progressive rock and jazz rock that do not mind a bit of lighthearted fun.

Free Music Review: FZ's Best, But Thats Just My Opinion...
Hit: 5 Stars

While my Zappa collection grows to the dozens, I've found myself listening to this album constantly. While when I first started listening to FZ I preferred his instrumental work like Hot Rats, Waka Jawaka, and The Grand Wazoo, rather then his satire drenched albums such as Were Only In It For The Money, Joes Garage, and Freak Out! One Size Fits All has the best of both equations, great jamming with roll on the floor hilarity oozing from the vocals. I haven't tired of any of the songs on the disc, just grown fonder of them over time. The second to last cut "Andy" is the most underrated song in FZ's collection. A hard funk groove mixed with equally hard rock and roll with lyrics so poignant, they will still be enlightening eons from now. This is THE Frank Zappa album to have, some aficionado's would state that "Were Only In It For The Money" is his essential recording, which it does reserve that title for good reason, I don't think its for everyone. This disc however could be enjoyed by anyone, if your even thinking about getting into Zappa, expanding your collection, or just need something new to enjoy, this disc is a must have.

Free Music Review: Full-Tilt Zappa
Hit: 5 Stars

Jazz, blues, fusion, rock, boogie, funk, humorus, complex, soothing, scorching, just about every style and theme Frank has been accused of in his music is here. For those of you who have never experienced FZ beyond the "Strictly Commercial" cuts, this is the album for you.

Of note is Johnny Guitar Watson's (an FZ acclaimed influnce) performance on "Andy", Napoleian Murphy Brock's antic's on "San Bernadino" and lovely Ruth "Ruthie Baby" Underwood's xylophone acrobatics on "Inca Roads" (my all time favorite cut).

And speaking of "Inca Roads", you guitar virtuoso's will appreciate FZ's solo. I believe this is the first appearance of the famed "Mutron III" alalog guitar effects processor (a highly sought after relec). Even more impressive is the fact that the songs basic track was recorded live at their KCET TV special while the guitar solo was recorded live during his 1974 Helsinki concert. Yet another demonstration of his superb studio workmanship.

A must have. If you can afford it, go for the Gold release.
