Free Music Review: Fantastic...
Hit: 5 Stars

When people label Zappa as 'jazz-fusion' this is one of the albums that is the reason for that. If you are looking for the acerbic witted lyrics or cuts that made The Mothers unique this isn't the album for you. If you are looking for an amazing and unique sound then you have come to the right place. I don't own a huge amount of Zappa but after listening to this album it has quickly risen in my estimation as one of his best. It clearly shows off Zappa's often talked about unique and gifted musical style but unlike many albums like "Sheik Yerbhouti" he doesn't let trying to be clever get in the way of the music. It's mostly instrumental and for me that's when Zappa shines.

Free Music Review: Big Band Zappa at its finest
Hit: 5 Stars

This album, in my opinion, is the highlight of Zappa's greatest period of work. The horn - dominated numbers fit perfectly with Frank's unique wah - wah style and George Duke's impressive keyboard work to produce an album that has lasted through time. From the long title cut to the ultra-funky keyboard riff of "Eat that Question" to the impressive, jazzy, and spacey sounds of "Blessed Relief," this album is definitely worth buying if you are into FZ's jazz-fusion instrumental works. Other albums that I would characterize with this album are: Hot Rats, Waka-Jawaka, Studio Tan, and Sleep Dirt. Get this CD and groove to FZ at his finest.

Free Music Review: tour de force
Hit: 5 Stars

Although TGW is arguably one of FZ's greatest and most cohesive albums, it may not be the best choice for the novice. It's somewhat inaccessible and requires repeated listening in order to appreciate the sheer scope of the bizarre soundscapes. So check out "Joe's Garage" or "Overnite Sensation" first if you're new to FZ. However, once you have acquired a taste for FZ, get this one. I own nearly 3/4 of his studio albums and this one is definitely in the top five. "Blessed relief" alone is worth the price of admission.

The world needs Frank Zappa and his spirit lives on, even if ugly radio ignores him...

Free Music Review: NOW THAT'S SOME SWEET JAZZ!!
Hit: 5 Stars

You enjoy jazz do you? You enjoy the funk that gets you moving out off of your refurbished leather sofa? Zappa delivers the goods on this release. He explores so many time signatures, counterpoint structures, and harmonic relationships that it may be hard to grasp the first time around. Despite it's complicated nature, it sure is a pleasure to subject one's ears to this piece of history. Throughout this composition, Frank has somehow used dissonance as melodic companion. What else is there to say about this album, it lays the foundation for anyone wanting to explore avant-garde jazz fusion.

Free Music Review: This album has most definitely passed the test of time.
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this album when it first came out (having kept up with Zappa releases since "We're Only In It For The Money") and found it to be extremely rewarding from a musical perspective. Not being big on listening to lyrics, this album grabbed me right away (don't worry though, I love the song "Calvin") and kept getting better all the way through. The last three selections (originally Side 2) are like a suite, and are so compelling that I can still listen to them repeatedly. With the one vocal exception, this is definitive instrumental Zappa (without the orchestra).
