Free Music Notes for Just Another Band From L.A.

Free Music Review: The influence of a frozen beef pie.
Hit: 4 Stars

I've always loved this album. Yeah, it's outdated, but what the hell, wasn't it recorded in 1971? This album was ahead of its time then in terms of weird lyrics & music. If you're from CA, especially the L.A. area, you'd probably enjoy it more than those from other parts of the US. 90% of the lyrics focuses on streets & locations which those from L.A. know of and can laugh at. I love Flo & Eddie. They're zany to say the least.

A funny story about Billy (a mountain), and his little wife Ethel (a tree growing off of his shoulder), eluding the US government. Why are they trying to elude the US government? Because Billy has been informed that he is to report for his induction physical. Studabaker Hawk (American super hero) has been given the mission of apprehending Billy so that he can serve his country in the armed forces. The song (skit) is about 23 minutes, and it
gives an interesting view on FZ's views on how he felt about the draft in '71. I still think it's funny to listen to from time to time.

The second half of the album is more on the musical side.
I love Magdellena. Funny lyrics & nice jammin' on FZ's part.

Free Music Review: Still remains one of my favorite Zappa CD's
Hit: 4 Stars

If you aren't adventurous enough to go for Zappa's deep avant-garde orchestra collages of noise and music, then this is a decent starting place. While the musicianship isn't up to Hot Rats, the singing is primo. Flo & Eddie were Zappa's best singers and they keep Billy The Mountain from getting too boring, though it does drag at times. Call Any Vegetable rocks, as does Dog Breath (you'll find one of Zappa's best guitar solos on the latter). Eddie Are You Kidding is pretty funny, but gets more dated every year. The end of Magdalena is overdone; we get the idea about singers who confess on stage. It's a funny song, but so un-correct that my wife won't let me play it in the house anymore. Sounded better when I was 17, but still great stuff and it'll make you smile unless you're Tipper.

Free Music Review: Not his best, but still very good
Hit: 4 Stars

"Just Another Band" is certainly not Zappa'a best work, but it's still very entertaining. It's the first FZ album I ever owned (back in 1972), so I have a soft spot for this one. Some fans can't stand the vocal antics of Flo & Eddie, but I think they're very funny. This version of the Mothers is not a bunch of virtuosos like FZ's later bands, but they get the job done. "Billy the Mountain" is 25 minutes of hysterically funny insanity. For those who don't know, "Eddie, Are You Kidding?" parodies an L.A. clothing store commercial. Even if you don't know the commercial (and I don't), the song is pretty funny. "Magdalena" is another twistedly funny song that I love. And the finale, "Dog Breath", kicks butt. All in all, it's a fun ride.

Free Music Review: My favorite Zappa line-up doing great material
Hit: 4 Stars

I only wish there was a video of this terrific cd. I saw them perfrom this and if you think Magdelena is, uh shall we say probelmatic as an audio, you should have seen Mr. Kaylan act out the part. Anyway, the vocals are incredible and don't believe what anyone else has to say - the music is top notch, including Zappa's phenomenal guitar work on both Call Any Vegetable and Dog Breath. In fact I defy anybody to find a more perfect live guitar solo with the possible exception of Crossroads. Get it, play it, and don't worry about the women in your life who will be appalled. That's the point!

Free Music Review: HYSTERICAL SATIRE IF NOTHING ELSE
Hit: 4 Stars

Yes indeed, Frank had better musically skilled line ups, but this one was one of, if not the funniest line up of all and this performance is a cut above the "Live At The Filmore" album. Ad-libbed one liners abound throughout "Billy The Mountain". Targets range from the federal goverment to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Flo and Eddie were never as funny on their own as they are here. Well worth the purchase.
