I think this is one case where the additions to the original album actually detract, or at least they should have been put on the tailend so they would not interfere with an album that was already well thought out. The music is top notch. I once saw a score that showed how Uncle Meat was put together. It was just like an orchestra score. And the care taken shows in the music, very complex but still works wonderfully, hauntingly beautiful music. It is a shame that rock did not follow down this path more, but I honestly think it is just to much work, the music is very complex,at least the instrumental Uncle Meat parts. This album does not get enough attention and is near the top of any lists of great albums (also put Richard and Linda Thompsons "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight and the soundtrack to "Paris Tx" by Ry Cooder on that same list). Uncle Meat is also a very playful funny album and a lot of fun if you stick with it and give it a chance to sink in. The album is not like any other album, the only ones that are even somewhat similiar in content are "Weasles Ripped My Flesh" or "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" and neither are as good as "Uncle Meat" but are worth tracking down if you liked "Uncle Meat" "Uncle Meat" is in its own category, like Eno's "Another Green World".Free Music Review: If you wanna know what Zappa is all about.....this is a good one for you.

This album.....man, what to say. I popped it in the player and listened to it 2 TIMES IN A ROW!! WOW! I mean, this album lets you experience many of Zappa's styles and characters all in one package.
If you are new to Zappa, don't be afraid to order this one. I has some CRAZY moments, but it all makes sense. You have to experience this one from cover to cover to understand the flow of the songs and how they relate to the artwork. The symphonic arrangements are HUGE and complex (as always) and the chaos seems to be contained at bay by the great tunes that surround it.
I get a real kick out of the second disc. This one is a departure from the musical flow of the first disc. It has a 37 minute track that is to be a sound track for a supposed movie called Unlce Meat. You listen to Zappa, Gail, and company rant on with lines form the movie and direction from Frank himself. It takes you away. You can really see what is happening the whole time. Frank has a way off performing audio-movies in a vivid and graphic manner.
BUY IT!!!! This album is toooooooo big to give it a true review without writting a 2 page introduction!!! From Chaos to Classical to Jazz to Hard Rock.....TRUE Zappa and the Mothers!!!!

There really isn't any way to describe Uncle Meat in a way that will prepare the listener. I'm not even going to try. This is by far the original Mothers most ambitious work. There's a lot of instrumental music, dialog, songs found on Uncle Meat. It is truly amazing the variety of sounds that were invented with studio techniques. Many of the humorous moments are purely instrumental (something Zappa got from Eric Dolphy I believe). If I had to pick a single Zappa CD that I could take with me to a desert island it would be Uncle Meat. I love this record, it's fun, interesting, fascinating really. Pure genius. If there is one record that demonstrates Zappa's genius, it is Uncle Meat. 10 Stars out of 5.
I do have one small criticism of this latest release. Zappa chose to put dialog from the movie along with a new song at the beginning of disc #2. That seems very strange to me. It interrupts the flow of the original album with "filler" material. Oh sure, the dialog is funny and interesting the first time one hears it but after that, it gets in the way. Weird. I'll never understand why he did that. If he needed filler it should have come after King Kong.

Like Sgt. Pepper or the first Velvet Underground album, Uncle Meat is one of about ten rock albums that throws out the rule book and starts over again.Conceptually, this record is a revolution. Zappa dismantles the whole idea of the rock album as a collection of songs. He fills Uncle Meat with litterally 100s of ideas that flow into each other. The music and sound-bytes don't have beginnings in endings. Rather, they simply set up the next piece, as the album gathers a run-away, hillucanatory momentum. Yet, every sound on this album has merit in and of itself. Zappa was able to let go of the steering wheel only because he understood his craft so well.
You don't hear many albums like Uncle Meat. Even in the context of 1969 experimentation, Zappa's ideas are simply too esoteric and sophistacated for mass conception. Only very obscure bands like Henry Cow even hinted at picking up Uncle Meat's massive torch. In an age of Hendrix, Joplin, and Led Zeppelin blasting out flame-thrower blues, Zappa's brillant, mad-geunius confetti was bound to get lost beneath the whale of Stratocasters.

It's really hard to pick a favorite Zappa album, but this is probably it. If I had to make a list of 5-10 albums that are representative of Zappa at his best, this would be in it for sure.
If you're not familiar with Zappa's late '60's stuff, this will not be an easy listen in the begining. It's very avant-guarde and jumps abruptly from one style to another (which I love!, but this may be Zappa at his creative peak. This one that may take several listenings to fully appreciate. I can tell you that I have owned this album for more than 20 years and I still hear new things!
The CD has added tracks from the Uncle Meat movie (which I haven't seen) which are total garbage. First time listeners should listen to the album as originally released - go from "Cruising for Burgers" to "King Kong". Without these perhaps it could have been squeezed onto one CD. Never mind that - the original music is worth the relatively high price.
