Free Music Review: Compositional Structure Is The Main Focus
Hit: 5 Stars

An outstanding album by the partially bisected Mother of Inventions, of which several member left causing a conglomeration of styles and new ideas. Nonetheless, Zappa still puts out a constructive effort, this time focusing more on compositional structures as opposed to lunacy. A lot of the tracks are similar to what was done on Lumpy Gravy, presenting a symphony of snorts, glisses, pitch alteration, and othertimes resembling Stavinsky's Rite of Spring. The tracks that stand out the most are: "Electric Aunt Jemina," with it's bubblegum texture; "Mr. Green Genes," which was later reprised on Hot Rats as "Son of Mr. Green Genes;" "Dog Breath" sporting 40 tracks of overdubbed percussion echoing Edgard Varese; and finally "King Kong" and its 5 different reworkings by each bandmember. If you already have Uncle Meat on vinyl, get the CD which has several bonus tracks from the self-titled movie.

Free Music Review: Another Surprise from Zappa! His first really progressive...
Hit: 5 Stars

i bought the vinyl version of this long ago because i was getting more and more into zappas music...but i thought that this was probably a not so good album being from 1969 and all...and was i in for a surprise! First , the sound was incredible! i mean this thing sounds better than a lot of recent rock albums i have heard...also here is the first example of many things zappa would do in future albums, like his totally original way of playing the guitar...also Ruth Underwood first played on this one and it adds that crazy marimba sound to the music which is totally wonderfull...also the writting really starts to get "progressive" with this one...by the way, THIS IS the first, or one of the first progressive albums ever, long before Henry Cow, Yes, etc. or any of those band arrived on the scene. Check it out!

Free Music Review: Great film music!
Hit: 5 Stars

This is one of Zappa's more inaccessable albums and you probably shouldn't listen to it unless you are already a fan. It contains a lot of improvisation by Zappa and band members but also some "composed" pieces which demostrate Zappa's talent as a composer.
Its got comedy in it (of course!) but instrumentals dominate the album. I should add though that even the instrumentals seem to be quite humerous. There is around 30 minutes of speech from the movie, which is also entertaining, but you probably won't find yourself listenign to those tracks so often.
As usual Zappa uses many different styles including rock, jazz, doo-wop, classical and others. Great album when you're in the mood for something wierd and a little darker in tone than most of Zappa's output.

Free Music Review: Part John Cage, Part Marx Brothers, and Pure Frank
Hit: 5 Stars

"Uncle Meat" isn't the easiest album to sink into, but once you do, you may never come out. It's a remarkable blend of Eric Dolphy/Ornette Coleman free jazz, on-the-road rants and hijinks, and just plain Zappa goofiness. As has been noted, Zappa did put a 35-minute sample of dialogue from the movie on CD number 2 -- by all means skip it; it's worthless. (As anyone who has seen 200 Motels knows, Zappa had no business making movies.) But the rest of this work is a spontaneous masterpiece that (almost) never stops pushing the envelope. Despite the casual atmosphere, one senses in Zappa a man who never ceases to demand the very best from his musicians. He asks them to do the impossible and on this record, it sounds like he gets it.

Free Music Review: We are not worthy!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been a Zappa fan since the 60's. Missed him at Miami Pop in 68, too young, saw him on halloween in Miami a few years later, missed him again in Ft. Lauderdale.......had tickets but too much partying prior to the show! was it. No more Florida appearances. How very sad he is gone.
A genious, as is this album. While those of you try to intellectually disect this piece of work I believe it can be explained by the tune "Tengo Na Minchia Tanta". This title is sicilian and means "I have a big c#@$"! What more really needs to be said!!!!!
