Free Music Review: One of zappa's finest albums
Hit: 4 Stars

Frank Zappa's Final CD with the Original Mothers of Invention (excluding post break-up albums) Is a great instrumental/jazz fusion type zappa album. This album has the only full king king set as far as I know, so that is a must for any zappa fan. Plus a few vocalized songs which can be quite catchy, this album is all fantastic except for one thing. The excerpt from the film on disc 2 is over a half hour long, and truthfully, could have been left off the album. that is the only thing keeping this from being a 5 star album. If you are a fan of frank zappa, get this album. It contains some of his finest work and some of his most challenging productions.

Free Music Review: illuminating
Hit: 4 Stars

Not his best, but essential because it was Zappa's first album to really encompass 'all' his styles and set the pattern for many differnt songs to appear over the next 25 years. Many songs included here appear in better versions elsewhere, but I keep coming back to the oridginals. Very imaginative. Not a 5th star because I never go through the 37 minute film excerpt that is included. Also Tengo na minchia tanta is too much out of place here. These tricks he should reserve for his live albums, most notably the YCDTOSA series

Free Music Review: One of Zappa's best!
Hit: 4 Stars

Great CD! One of Zappa's best! However, Amazon shipped it, and the case had a crack.

Free Music Review: This 1987 Remix Unpacks the Fruit
Hit: 3 Stars

I'd give this five stars for the music, but after doing an A-B comparison of this CD set and the original vinyl, I give the CD set three stars for its 1987 remix. I rate the vinyl as far better--not because of arcane "vinyl has more tang and warmth in itself" arguments, but because the 1968 mix kicks the feathers out of the 1987 digital remix, which is all one can get on CD. The 1968 mix sounds like 1968. The 1987 mix sounds like 60s musicians teleported to a 1987 studio. The aural image or "soundstage" in the original is quite tight, but with justice--it's not too cramped. But it features a sharp drum sound without a lot of cymbal sibilance and it does have other "saxy" high-mid range sounds involving keys and reed instruments that the remixers decided they didn't like anymore, so that the instruments have a wildly different EQ and are spread out on the soundstage like raisins taken out of the box and laid neatly onto a table. Well, Ok, but it doesn't sound like the Mothers in 1968 anymore--too much digital air, sweetness, and sibilance is added. The tight, dark sound quality of the vinyl mix, like that of a "band in a good basement club" sound, is lost.

Don't let this review stop you from getting the CD--as it is not an "abomination" remix, as some 80s remixes were, but consider the vinyl if you like vinyl . . .

Free Music Review: Would be great as a single-disc album
Hit: 3 Stars

There's some wonderful stuff here, most notably "King Kong," but unfortunately half the album is filler. Best left to the hardcore Zapa fans (like me).
