Free Music Review: Zappa loses his audience on this one
Hit: 2 Stars

I was a Zappa fan until he started in on his jazz flavored musical albums. He lost me on this one. Zappa seemed to have become obsessed with jamming rather than writing music. Many of the albums which follow this one seem to be nothing but recorded jams that seem to go on forever. Sales plummeted, fans defected, I held onto my wallet and stopped buying Zappa albums. The music became complex for its own sake-and less enjoyable. Some people loved this Zappa material, it is true, but that group became smaller and smaller. In retrospect, few critics (or fans) count Zappa's work after his first 3-4 albums as among his best.

Free Music Review: Okay, but where is the idea?
Hit: 1 Stars

I will try to be as elegant as possible. First, to record, (or create something in general) one needs an idea. This is possibly old fashioned, but to me recording conversations, very, very ordinary (and forgettable) songs, improvising for the sake of it, which goes on and on and trying hard to be "weird" is not a great effort. On my copy of this cd there is something, not sure what to call it, which goes on for 37 minutes and is nothing else but some braindead conversation, someone taking a shower and whatever. How deep, meaningful and creative (I mean: what a waste of space and time). I am not a music composer, but if I get thoughts like "I can do this" (even though I know this is not correct), then we have a problem. I didn't feel this way (I can do this) when I heard Brain Salad Surgery, Trilogy, from EL&P, or Relayer from Yes. I mentioned these because I was told Uncle Meat is progressive rock, or something. I don't think so. But wait! Maybe people who "think" they like Uncle Meat don't know what good music is, nobody explained to them. Well, the above mentioned ones (Yes, EL&P) are a good start. Uncle Meat on the other hand is just an empty and very stupid practical joke. My experience with Zappa is limited, I listened to Hot Rats recently as well, which is better than Uncle Meat, but even on that album there are some overlong, repetitive improvizations. If you are not creative enough, just don't do it.
Mr. Zappa, we won't meet again.
