Free Music Notes for Apostrophe

Free Music Review: audacious, hilarious, flatulent
Hit: 5 Stars

I don't know what is more impressive about this album, the sheer unmitigated audacity of Frank's imaginitive lyrics or the amazing orchestration of drums, bass, keyboards, violins, saxes, trumpets and back-up vocals. Every note is placed so perfectly that Frank doubtlessly merits the masterpiece tag with this one. There are moments in "St. Alonzo's Pancake Breakfast" where Frank's bass and guitar are so furious and elaborate that I shake my head in bewildered musical incredulity. Think Pastorious with Weather Report on a good day. I'm serious. Frank unloads all of his tricks and amazing skills on this album and moves between funk, old-school jazz, acid-rock and blues with frightening agility and composure. This is a great one to acquaint yourself with just how enourmous a musical talent was Zappa

Free Music Review: UNCLE REMUS
Hit: 5 Stars

Woe!!!
Are we movin' too slow? have you seen us. Uncle Remus?
Did we look pretty sharp in these clothes
unless we get sprayed with a hose
it ain't bad in the day
if they squirt it your way
'cept in the winter when it's froze
and it's hard if it hits on your nose
"Just keep your nose to grindstone they say"
will tht redeem us, Uncle Remus
I can't wait 'til my 'fro is full grown
I'll just throw away my 'do rag at home
I'll take a drive to Beverly Hills, just before dawn
and knock the little jockys off the rich peoples lawn
and before they get up I'll be gone
before they get up I'll be knockin' the jockys off the lawn.........

I enjoy this CD very much. Frank Zappa was a talented muscian and songwriter. This album shows how good he was as both. All of the songs are upbeat and sardonic, which makes a protest song like UNCLE REMUS most effective. The characters have a cartoon quality about them. Nanook, Alphonzo and Father O'Blivion demonstrate FZ as a great story-teller. Not to be outdone by anyone, APOSTROPHE includes a great guitar jam. If you are interested in fun, entertaining music which does not sacrifice sophsitication, or if you are interested in guitar music of the early seventies this CD will interest you. It's proabably as good a place as any to start listening to FZ, in case you have been putting that off, too.

Free Music Review: Good First Album
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to disagree with some of the reviews I saw about Overnite-Sensation... THIS is the place to start if you're looking for your first Zappa CD. A long while back, a friend of mine introduced me to "We're Only In It For The Money". I got through the first couple of songs and gave up (Now I can hardly believe that I ever lived *without* "Who Needs The Peace Corps?" and "Concentration Moon"!). A few months later I came across a copy of Apostrophe. I could listen to nothing else for weeks. More polished and commercial than most of Zappa's stuff, this album is also not without it's irreverency, satire, and just plain good old fashioned weirdness.

Free Music Review: One of Zappa's very best...
Hit: 5 Stars

Zappa had a way of making the absurd believable and credible. Apostrophe is a collection of simply remarkable songs that continue in that very tradition. From the opening of "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" to the evil closer, "Stink-foot", the record is tight and beautiful. Zappa knew exactly what he wanted and led his expert band through some amazingly complex arrangements, even recruiting bassist Jack Bruce to play some nasty fuzz bass on the title cut. I was going to start picking favorite cuts, but I don't think I could, as every number here is a classic in my mind. This is a great first Zappa album for anyone who's ready for something different.
