Free Music Notes for ApostropheFree Music Review: The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe Hit: 5 Stars
Definitive Zappa. If you like a bit of wackiness with your outstanding music, then Zappa's your man. "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" introduces us to Nanook. "Nanook Rubs It" involves Nanook and his epic battle with the fur trapper. Next comes "St. Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast" (where I stole the margarine). Included are "Cosmic Debris", "Excentrifical Forz", "Father O'Blivion", "Apostrophe" (another brilliant Zappa solo), "Uncle Remus" (I'll be knocking the jockeys off the lawn) and "Stink Foot", which I find to be just plain hilarious.
If you're a Zappa fan, you already have this. If you don't know much about Zappa, this is an excellent place to start.
Free Music Review: is this zappa's best album? Hit: 5 Stars
Maybe so. It is also probably his best band. FZ has often said that music shouldn't get in the way of good lyrics. He has also practiced (though not explicitly said) the opposite. This album is the exception. The two combine in a way rarely found: Humour and some of the most sophisticated music you're ever likely to hear come together here. I have a real problem if I have to compare this album to "we're only in it for the money" or "200 Motels" or "Live in New York", or "Hot Rats". But it may just be the best. I dicovered FZ through this album when I was 15. I have never looked back since.
Free Music Review: Best of Zappa Hit: 5 Stars
Many years ago this was the first of Zappa that I ever heard. Over the years since then I have amased quite a Zappa collection but I always come back to Apostrophe as the best of Zappa. I love every single cut on this album.
I have worn out three records and two cassett tapes and finally broke down and purchased this CD. It was like coming home. I had not heard several of these songs for a few years but found myself singing along like it was yesterday.
If this is the only Zappa that you add to your music collection you will not go wrong and will be totally satisfied. This is Zappa's best!
Free Music Review: Good stuff, but... Hit: 5 Stars
...but nothing. This album is very funny and very entertaining indeed. Instrumentally, this music is complex and intense, yet easy on the ear and laid back. Following Overnite Sensation, Zappa continues to use his Dinah-Moe Humm pimp voice in unison with non-sensical lyrics (not so much smut here as before, mind you) and certain familiar phrases crop up as well (biting poodles, ponchos etc).
If you have a sense of humour, appreciate musical intricacy, are not put of by wierdness and have had enough of predictable love songs, you'll love this thing. Badass guitar solos too.
Free Music Review: A Must Have as well as A Good Start for FZ fans Hit: 5 Stars
This is an interesting FZ album. If you allready know Frank's work you've allready heard it. If you're sorta into him what are you waiting for? Get this now. You'll find some or all of what you like about him here: His weird/funny/politcal lyrics, his brilliant instrumentation and his Kick ass guitar! This one is not my personal favorite Zappa (Fillmore East '71, Hot Rats) but it does good in a pinch. Somehow I always put Apostrophe and Overnite Sensation together. They're similar in style and sequence. Both very worthy efforts!
