Free Music Notes for Bongo FuryFree Music Review: This one just gets better and better Hit: 5 Stars
This was one of the first Zappa Cd's I ever owned (after Apost/Over and Joe's of course). I bought it for Carolina and Muffin Man, which I had heard on a friend's tape. At first I was put off by the Captain's rasping, grating vocals, and could not really get into the whole disc. Over time, however, I have not only developed a new appreciation for the great George Duke and Napolean Brock efforts on this disc, but the overall feel of the album. Somehow, it actually sounds just right when the Captain belts out "You'll take me to my relatives house in East LA, and make me watch the rubber tongue when it comes out!!!!" I love it. Throw in some truly original tunes, the best versions of Carolina and Advance Romance IMHO on any Zappa album, and the greatest sounding guitar solo of all time at the end, and you have a winner. Humor, musicianship, wackiness, originality, and great guitar. All the hallmarks of a great Zappa album. If you're a newbie, take heed by my admission above that I wasn't quite ready for this one when I first got it and pick up something more accessible first.
Free Music Review: Twisted, blistering sonic poetry Hit: 5 Stars
This live Zappa album, featuring the added talents of avant-garde/psychedelic jazz/beat poet guru Captain Beefheart, is indescribably excellent. Zappa's band lay a lush bluesy backdrop to his and the Captain's abstract lyricism, and the performances as a whole are absolutely gorgeous. "Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy" will sweep you off your feet, while one of my faves "Poofter Froth Wyoming Plans Ahead" will have you in fits of laughter and amazement over the ingenious rhyming and intonation of the Captain. This joint effort is a mammoth merging of Zappa's raging musical hormones with Beefhearts outerworldly illogic, culminating in THE perfect encore - "Muffin Man", which has to be heard to believed. Who else but Zappa would stop in the middle of a song's prologue, claiming to have gotten a phrase wrong, and try it again, with the results sounding as professional as ever? This is the kind of offbeat stuff that makes die-hard Zappa maniac-pe! rsons like myself treasure the antics contained within Bongo Fury ever more. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Plastic Leather 14DDD Hit: 5 Stars
I have listened to this about as much as any album I have ever owned. What was once highly unusual I now view as the norm. Indeed, it might seem strange to Herb and Dee, but I have turned a lot of Top 40-type friends on to this bizarro piece of musical masterpiece. I once refused to lend the cassette (!) to some friends, telling them that they were not ready for it. It was sort of a Tom Sawyer whitewashing the fence thing, but I knew they would love it, but I also knew they would not give it a fair listen under any other circumstances.
The incredible thing is that they turned this out from a live performance. The synchronization, the timing, the remarkably abrupt shifts in style and substance are truly remarkable. Zappa has such a unique talent of writing funny lyrics but making the actual MUSIC funny as well. He lived thoroughly tongue in cheek. This album is priceless. Absolutely superb. I would hate to imagine the person I would be if I did not love it.
Free Music Review: DARK AND BITCHIN' Hit: 5 Stars
This was the first Zappa album I ever bought.
I first heard it when I was 15 and became a fan ever since!
This is simply the best live album ever. (even with the supplemental
studio additions) The whole overall disc has a dark magic to it.
And a charm that no other album has. Cucamonga is a wonderful studio
track amid the live stuff! All the solos are AWESOME! And
Debra Kedabra is the most terrifying song EVER! Spine chilling in it's
feverishness!
Turn this disc up and listen to it with some volume and it will
explode from the speakers! You'll get the "live feel"
and it will all sound so "immediate."
Some have said this album sounds too uneven. What do they mean by that!!? All Zappa albums are "all-over-the-map" full of "dada"
variety!! Those people haven't heard much Zappa. GET this cd and
have a great aural adventure!!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Free Music Review: The best stuff is great indeed Hit: 5 Stars
This is somewhat of a hodge podge of different styles and lyrical themes, but the best stuff is great indeed. "Advance Romance" has some of the most intense, compelling blues playing by anyone in the history of the blues on record--the slide guitar solo by Denny Walley, harmonica solo by Beefheart, and guitar solo by Zappa are all just tremendous. The guitar soloing in the middle of "Carolina.." is similarly superb. The Beefheart vocal numbers are among his most conventional on record--it is up to each person's personal taste if they like them more or less than "Trout Mask Replica" and other more adventurous works. Zappa hit the nail on the head with his jaundiced view of the Bicentennial hype, but those songs are a bit slight. But all of this album is at least quite good, and the best of it hits Olympian peaks.
