Free Music Notes for Bongo FuryFree Music Review: This is a very good album. Hit: 5 Stars
This is certainly a very good album - especially for those of us who like melodies that would bug most people.
Free Music Review: Beefheart! Hit: 5 Stars
Do you like Zappa? Do you like Beefheart? Then why don't you have this album yet? But it now!! Great music!
Free Music Review: not perfect but damn fine Hit: 4 Stars
It's an uneven live album from the legendary 75 bongo fury tour. Zappa has two great solos here: carolina hard core ecstasy and the jaw dropping muffin man. Debra Kedabra is very good and has zany lyrics. carolina is a top tune too. sam with the scalp flat top is amusing, especially when beefheart yells 'sam was a BASKET CASE!!!' poofter's froth wyoming plans ahead is so-so, 200 years old is quite good, it has some good guitar. There is also a great song called advance romance, good slide playing by denny walley, good zappa playing. cucamonga is studio stuff, it's pretty good. man with the woman head is some more strange beefheart poetry with good music. muffin man has a great studio intro, riff and one of the all time great guitar solos. Play it loud. So the verdict is a good album, but i wish there were more songs on it and more solos, i've heard Frank's playing on this tour was great. Muffin Man is proof! Thank you.
Free Music Review: Great Live Zappa Hit: 4 Stars
"Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy" is reason enough to buy this CD-- the line "She put a Doobie Brothers tape on/I had a Roger Daltry cape on" pretty much sums up the dating and rock scene in the 1970's in hilarious fashion. (Not that I'm old enough to have experienced either). Also, the spoken word interludes by Captain Beefheart are well-placed and surprisingly entertaining. I'm not sure this is as good a Zappa starting point as Over-Nite Sensation (which would be the definitive "introductory" Zappa album, unless you want to start chronologically), but if you already think you like Zappa, buy this one.
Free Music Review: two big egos of the music era together Hit: 4 Stars
It's fun to have a bit more material with the voice of the beloved Captain Beefheart on it.
He and Zappa were childhood friends who in time grew to be more like a tired married couple.
There's a good video out there from the 90's that tells the tale of Zappa giving Beefheart this gig out of the kindness of his heart, the flipside of course is that Beefheart also gave Zappa a vocalist Par excellence.
It's a quirky mix of music and prose, but definitely more on the Zappa side of theatrical composition with electric instruments.
