Free Music Notes for Cruising with Ruben & The JetsFree Music Review: A grower Hit: 4 Stars
Although not in the same league as his other stuff, this album is worth hearing. It's great to hear all the doowop harmonies and the great vocals by collins/estrada. The songs are very good, there are some freak out remakes and some new songs. One of these is 'love of my life' which appears on tinseltown rebellion also on stage vol4. So it's interesting to hear the original. I have the arthur barrow redubbed bass version, which i like-he's a swell bassist. 'Cheap Thrills' is a catchy little song that begins the album. Nice upright bass playing here, good inane lyrics. 'You didn't try to call me' is agreat remake, with some good guitar. 'jelly roll gumdrop' is a delightful song. Also 'fountain of love' is a treat. All the songs are good man!! It does take some getting used to the doowop style,so the album takes a while to grow on ya. 'stuff up the cracks' is a fitting finale, with the singer topping himself-death by gassing! Not the only time 'gas' appears in a zappa song-see the album zoot allures. Frank treats us to a majestic wah-wah guitar solo too. It's the mothers of invention Jim,but not as we know them. Thank you.
Free Music Review: Cruisin For A Bruisin Hit: 4 Stars
Taken simply as satire, this album works just fine. But what a lot of people didn't get at the time was that it also worked as progressive (don't laugh) doo-wop with chord progressions that showed the original Mothers as one of the most talented bands of their generation.Musically, it's all over the place, but "Fountain Of Love" and "Stuff Up The Cracks" are two of the most underrated tunes in the Zappa catalogue. If you're a fan of such later efforts as "Joe's Garage" or "Lather", you probably shouldn't bother with this one. But if you're a true music lover with an acute sense of humour, it's more than worth the purchase.
Free Music Review: Frank's Curveball Hit: 4 Stars
I remember loving this album when I rushed home and put on the turntable--my friends hated it. In 1968, it was the Doors, Hendrix, etc. If it was loud or acid friendly, it was "cool". But along with the Band's "Big Pink", Dylan's "John Wesley Harding", and the Byrd's "Sweetheart of the Rodeo", Frank's "Crusing" was a return to the roots of rock and a work of far greater substance than much of the other recordings released in 1968. Simple, poetic, doo wop. And a showcase for Ray Collins. As a purist, the only thing that prevents me from giving 5 stars is the 1980s bass/drum overdub. Nevertheless, Ray Collins still shines through.
Free Music Review: Cheap Thrills! Hit: 4 Stars
This album is a gem, and for Zappa novices something of a curve ball... However, the songs are, as the Germans say, "ear worms" (i.e. they get in there but it's hard to get 'em out!). The remixed/remastered CD falls a bit short of the original LP mix, which is why I give it only 4 stars. I have to wonder why it was changed in any way other than to clean up hiss and garbage in the source recording. However, this is still a really good CD by almost any measure, and a must to gain a greater appreciation for that unique brand of Zappa humor and artistry.
Free Music Review: Good Hit: 4 Stars
I have always really liked this album, but I feel that the way FZ redid the bass, drums, and other parts was too excessive and I personally enjoy the original vinyl version much much more. The CD seems too echoed on the vocals and many things are mixed very differently. I will still reccommend this version however, because you'll be really hard-pressed to find the original vinyl issue.
