Free Music Notes for Hot RatsFree Music Review: Stinky Funk Jamz and Some Polish, Too! Hit: 5 Stars
This is the first FZ album I heard, and after 3 listens, I was hooked. The open-jams "Willie the Pimp" and "Gumbo Variations" are sweet grooving sweat-sessions. And this album has smooth polished compositions "Peaches" and "Little Umbrellas" and "It Must Be A Camel" making this a well-rounded album for those unfamiliar with the established genius of Frank Zappa. That's Captain Beefheart singing on "Willie the Pimp" and that's Shugie Otis playing bass on "Peaches." After this album, you might check out "Apostrophe" and "Overnight Sensation." Especially if you can get them both on one disk (look around this bargain)! Now, repeat after me... "I'm a little pimp with my hair gassed back Pair a khaki pants with my shoe shined black.."
Free Music Review: Zappa, I'm glad I met ya! Hit: 5 Stars
I recently purchased this CD as my primer to Zappa, feeling that (at long last) I ought to give a listen to his material. So happy to have made the introduction! I am absolutely floored by the complexity, artistry, and beauty of this album. I just wasn't expecting such breathtaking composition and musicianship. If 'Peaches en Regalia' and 'The Gumbo Variations' were the only two songs on the disc I'd still call it amazing and more worthwhile than half of the others in my collection. I realize that more 'serious' jazz/fusion musicians had/have been doing this sort of thing for ages (and maybe better), but that level of material has always seemed too dense for an uninitiated listener (like me). Even for someone, such as myself, with a bent (admittedly) toward less 'challenging', more pop-oriented sounds, this album is immediately approachable. What a gem!

GO GET IT. I personally prefer it on vinyl because it has more of a "lets start making out" appeal with the ladies. Especially side 2.
As far as the cd is concerned, I didn't notice many differences.
WILLIE THE PIMP, is like a way extended sixties party song (Like you'll hear it in the background of all those movies where the "squares" try to look cool by smoking pot and then they start going berserk and make an ass of themselves so that some chick can laugh and say "thats not very groovy.")
It way rocks though. And the fact that every other song is instrumental doesn't hurt a thing. Trust me.
This album is cool, sexy, and even some times a little funny in the background or right up in your earphones this album is a winner.
Sincerely,
Wally the Pimp
Free Music Review: The LP Album sounds much better than the CD Hit: 5 Stars
I love Frank Zappas music. And there sure is a variety of it to choose from. My first album was The Grand Wazoo, and man did that Jazz album really set the proper stage for me to admire Frank. My second purchase was Hot Rats ( even though it was recorded first) and it just sealed my love for his music. I just assumed Frank was a jazz musician although later, I learned that he was much more than that. The only critique I have for Hot Rats is the Remixd CD. I think it is terrible compared to the sound quality of the LP album. The album has a much better tone with much richer bass and drums. If you can find the album, listen to it and you will see what I mean. Fortunately, the Grand Wazoo sounds exactly like the LP album. Was Frank a genius? I don't know, but he sure made a jazz noise here.
Free Music Review: Zappa Jazz? Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this album only after I was surprised to find two of it's peices in my "Real Book" (The "Real Book" is a book that gathered together hundreds of Jazz standards-A standard is a jazz classic- and is known, and probably used, by jazz musicians.). It was my first Zappa expirience, and I loved it. Of course I've learned how to play the standards. The fact that they are in the book means that someone, somewhere, the mysterious figure that edit the "Real Book", found that this music is serious and good enough to be considered a jazz classic. I agree. The two peices- The great "Peaches En Regilla" and the very very cool "Son of Mr. Green Genes" are truly good peices of music. The album is fun to listen to, and, if you are a musician, fun to play.
