Free Music Notes for Hot RatsFree Music Review: My favorite Zappa album Hit: 5 Stars
Fabulous album, Zappa and Ian Underwood go overdub mad on tracks laid down live-in-studio by incredible rhythm sections, using one of the first 16 track recorders. The composing - both the underlying songs and the arrangements and layers and doublings that seem to have been created during overdubs - is amazing. Combines great musicianship, balls to the wall playing and just a tiny touch of the arch sense of humor Zappa is known for. A total classic. My only criticism is that I prefer the mix from the old LP version. The CD-era remix brings out the filligree of detail, which is nice, but lacks some of the warmth and grooviness of the LP. The perfect Zappa album for jazzers and people who find his lyrics (tailored, by his own account, for 13 year old boys) ultimately tiresome.
Free Music Review: If you buy no other Zappa, then buy this CD!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Zappa produced a ton of CDs in his life but this particular one stands out. True Zappa fans with 20+ CDs know that this one is different as it can NOT be found on music store shelves due to it's demand. While Zappa's Over Night Sensation CD brought him to the forefront of the general public, Hot Rats CD cemented Zappa as a certified master musician. Two tracks stand above the others: Willie the Pimp and The Gumbo Variations are incomparable. Visualize Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Sugar Cane Harris, Jean Luc Ponty, and every other musical superstar thats dreamed of jamming with Zappa at least once, combining efforts together and putting out at 200% in a 17+ minute jam session. It is on this CD. If you have only two CDs in your music collection this should be one of them!
Free Music Review: Astonishing Hit: 5 Stars
This has got to be one of the greatest albums of all time. I say that without a flicker of doubt. There is nothing to find fault with on this album. Nothing at all. Everything is top notch from the musicianship down to all the little nuances that you are still noticing even after the 16 years of listening to it that I have had. It seems unfair and disrespectful to refer to the tracks as "songs", these are compositions of the highest order. Peaches En Regalia and Son of Mr. Green Genes have to be two of my favorite songs ever and the rest of the album is not far behind. Anyone who has even a slight interest in jazz/fusion and rock music should get this album as fast as they possibly can.
Free Music Review: Ignore the critics above Hit: 5 Stars
Completely disregard the critics above. They are tin-eared and close minded. Hot Rats is one of the masterpieces of the 20th century. One of the first jazz-rock albums, it contains some of Zappa's best songs. "Peaches" is brilliant. "Son of Mr. Green Genes" is for my money the best 8 minutes of music since Stravinsky. THis album is not to be missed if you have any inkling towards liking jazz. No other CD sounds like this - complete timbre craziness. Anyone who says there is "too much electric violin" on this album, obviously didn't listen to it - I think there is one 2 minute solo somewhere. Ignore these ignorant critics! Buy this album!
Free Music Review: I actually prefer the CD! Hit: 5 Stars
When the Hot Rats CD first came out, I remember thinking that the sound quality of the CD was better than that of the LP. I thought the LP sounded a bit "muddy", and that muddiness was cleared up/equalized out on the CD. I have not heard the LP in about 15 years, so I wonder if my impressions would be any different now. Seems like everybody else preferred the LP.Either way, I do give Hot Rats 5 stars...with only one slight qualification... The music is very lush, rich, and dense, kind of like a Lindt chocolate. I can only handle so much of it before I need a break. Then, after a while without it, I happily come back to it's splendor.
