No, this is not Zappa's best album."Freak Out" is his best. This is the album you should introduce Zappa to people with however. I mean, this album is some of the BEST jazz rock ever made ( I like it alot more than Weather Report to be sure) and it became my daily bread after hearing the "Gumbo Variations"(I NEVER played air saxophone before this song(or for that matter, air violin)). This album is Zappa the composer taking control, and stuffing it in the non-believer's faces, no compromises. Best tracks: Gumbo Variations(GOD this song is so awesome) and Peaches en Regalia. Willie the Pimp is really great howver in its unedited version(perfect timing, perfect twiddly-twiddly guitar). As Zappa once said "Jazz is the music of the unemployed". With this album however, I believe he had more than enough work to do and made plenty of money doing it(It is his most popular album).Free Music Review: Great music!

I bought this album when it originally came out on vinyl. I thought it was amazing then, and it still sounds as fresh today as it did over thrity years ago!I remember how stunned I felt, almost ten years ago, when I heard that Frank Zappa had died. It was an international tragedy! Zappa was unique. He was irreplaceable. There was no one else in his league!
Zappa could do it all, and do it all well. He could sing, play excellent guitar, write lyrics, and, most importantly, WRITE music! He was as much a part of the lineage of Bach, Beethoven, Stravinsky, etc., as he was part of the lineage of Guitar Slim, Hank Ballard & the Midnighters, etc.
Zappa was able to write his own musical scores. No other rock 'n' roll bandleader of Zappa's era had this skill. Because of it, future generations will be able to read and perform Zappa's music for many more years (centuries) to come.

this has got to be the finest cd that has ever been created. now, a blow by blow.peaches en regalia - what can i say except it's tight, fast, and unforgettable.
willie the pimp - WHOOPOOPOPP, WHOOP WHOOP. if you can make yourself sound like captain beefheart on this song, beautiful girls fall out of the sky and want to "set you straight."
son of mr. green genes - this is quite possibly the most beautiful song that has ever been created. and i'm not kowtowing when i say that - i sincerely get goosebumps when i hear the finale. words won't do it justice
little umbrellas - not my favorite, but a cool little ditty. is always played in dark smoky rooms.
the gumbo variations - car trip? no worry! gumbo variations will keep you entertained.
it must be a camel - this song is just too weird and too cool to pass up.
and there you have it. frank zappa is the man.
Free Music Review: Possibly the one perfect Zappa album...

A few months ago, I bought this CD on a whim. I hadn't heard much about it, and the one Zappa album I had bought (Playground Psychotics) was godawful.Boy am I glad that I'm a compulsive spender. Almost every song on it is perfect. Willie the Pimp is the best song on here, Captain Beefheart's singing (the only singing on the whole album) is some of the most aggressive and primal sounds ever put onto vinyl. Peaches en Regalia is the most effective song Zappa has ever done. The tune surfaces in my mind every once in a while, and I have stop whatever I'm doing and give it my copmlete attention. This has caused numerous car accidents.
This would definitely be the one album I'd bring on a desert island. I'd play Willie the Pimp until the coconuts shook off the trees. It's guaranteed to make your foot tap and brighten your mood.
Worth every penny, Buy It.
