Free Music Review: The Great Lost Zappa Album

Lather is one of Zappa's most ambitious creations, covering multiple continents of musical territory. There's tightly played hard rock, dopey little ditties, soaring guitar solos, moody orchestral pieces--and all segue into a single roller-coaster ride for the ears. I was lucky enough to have picked up test pressings of the original unreleased LPs of Lather years ago, and I'm happy to say that these CDs, lovingly remastered at Frank's own studio after his death, live up to the promise of Zappa's vision for this work. Plus there are several outtakes, including a lengthy and energetic guitar solo, "Lather Goods," excerpted within the album but also included in its original form.This is absolutely essential stuff for any hardcore Zappa fan, but also a good introduction to the variety of Frank's work for those not familiar with the enormous FZ canon.

As an individual that actually survived and therefore lived the 60s/70s I must recommend this compilation/concert as an extraordinary work of art from, perhaps, one of the top 5 composers of the 20th century.
Much of what I would say about Mr. Zappa has been said already - most of which is correct.
However, for you music majors out there, LISTEN to the humor music, the political arguments, the appeal to the teeny bopper lyrics. MANY of these "tunes" contain motifs, full themes and previews of orchestrations yet to be heard by the general public.
(Yes, even though we are musicians we are indeed part of the general public.)
To EVERYONE - this album (does that show my age?) is exemplary of the man and the composer that was Frank Zappa.
A MUST HAVE FOR ANY THAT APPRECIATE THE ART OF MUSIC!!

The first track, Regyptian strut is a wah, wah march, the various array of odd percussion, keyboards and guitars are Zappas essence in his finest. Alot of the songs have the most full lyrics with songs about the beach, the devil and ofcourse nocturnal gregarious wild swines. Yes Greggary Pecary is what I'm talking about the longest most entertaining musical monologue in history. Describing the life of a strange pig, evil hunchmen and the world's greatest living "philostepher" with stunning musical accompliment Greggary Peccary is guarenteed to give you laughs and enjoyment galore. The other musical peices such as Revenge of the Knick Knack people and Filthy habbits are fun and dangerous. Mr. Zappa. you are god!

Until the arrival of this CD, the only way to get Lather in it's entirety was to search far and wide for the LP box set that currently goes for 800 bucks, or try to find a copy from someone that had taped the radio broadcast back in the 70's. Frank's legal battles with Warner Brothers were legendary, but so was his tenacity and focus. It may have taken around 20 years, but Lather is now a commercial reality and although I don't want to say that it was worth the wait (I didn't - I searched out a vinyl copy) it is great that it's now available. This is perhaps Frank's most fully realized work, adequately accessible, diverse and yet fully netted together as a complete package. Certainly qualified as essential Zappa.
