Free Music Review: A brilliant overview of some excellent material

Seeing that much of the material on Lather has been previously released on four separate Zappa albums during the late 70's, this 3CD set can be viewed as more of a "Best of Zappa 1976 - 1981" rather than a complete album, as it was intended to be. Despite this, even if you do own those four albums ("Zappa In New York" and the Warner Brothers trilogy), it is well worth acquiring Lather for the monster that it is. Alongside the previously released tracks, it contains alternate versions of some favourites, as well as some unreleased gems, but it all comes together as one big impressive whole.

What a thorough exploration of the scope and breadth of the music of Frank Zappa! I saw FZ in 1971 with Flo & Eddie at SUNY at Stony Brook. In 1973 with Jean Luc Ponty at the Hollywood Palladium. Finally at the Roxy later in 73/74? Missed him since then and recently read Barry Miles superb bio on FZ. It reminded me of how much I enjoyed the music so I got Lather, Hot Rats, One Size Fits All, Absolutely Free and Live at the Roxy. I had much of these on vinyl. These were a good sampling of the best of FZ. Interesting quote from liner notes. In heaven Jimi Hendrix sits at the feet of FZ.Free Music Review: A must-have for Zappa Fans

I bought this album with an air of giddy excitement compareable only to that of a raging necrophiliac in an unsupervised morgue. Over three hours of music in one package. everything from the silly and grotesque Zappa lyrics we all know and love to the prolific and hard-rocking instrumentals. This album has quickly became one of my favorites among my collection.Free Music Review: Great

In one neat 3 cd package this summarized FZ's career up to that point (later excursions into Synclavier territory are absent here). From heavy metal riffing to comedy music, from chamber music to pop ditties, from provocations to to improvisations this is Frank at his best.
