Free Music Notes for Over-Nite SensationFree Music Review: it's a classic Hit: 5 Stars
Frank Zappa has a talent for creative goofiness. That means, even though your first opinion upon listening to any one of his albums (except Hot Rats) is that he's deliberately singing in a goofy style, his ability to put a song together creativey and make it sound like something *no one* else could possibly create makes him an original genius. It really does.
Over-Nite Sensation captures every aspect of Frank Zappa's creative and silly side perfectly. Could it be the ultimate Frank Zappa album? Well, I choose Hot Rats as the mans BEST album, but Over-Nite Sensation isn't far behind. This album, unlike Hot Rats, has vocals, and silly lyrics about going to Montana, dental floss, um... girls doing naughty things, and more!
Meanwhile, his FLAT OUT AWESOME guitar soloing skills are implemented into the songwriting, and other unpredictable things such as female vocals in the background.
It's just a really great album, though a very short one. I highly recommend this album. You might not like it, I admit, because he really dips into his goofy side here, but he also backs up his silly ways with great songwriting and a creative touch unlike anyone else.
Free Music Review: Redundant Masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
Five stars? But of coarse. This is Zappa we're talking about here. The quintesential musical rouge, who, with all odds against him, continued to create and baffle the masses. It would be ridiculous for me to lable this his best, for as true Zappa fans know, every production of his was a true gem in it's own right. What I find unique in this recording, is Frank's ability to influence and affect those otherwise "non-Zappa fans" with his extremely versitile and ever-changing compositions. In essense, he created a totaly different sound "overnight" just to accomadate his non-fans for the purpose of their musical enjoyment. The end result: Musical enjoyment of somebody you don't like! And to us, the diehards, just another band from L.A. continuing to create and baffle and smother us with musical genius and heartfelt bliss. Frank is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But neither he or his fans really care. We have his music! "Overnight" is truly a sensation. Try it, you'll like it. If you don't, there are a few Bay City Roller albums floating around out there!

Free Music Review: Nowhere near a sellout, just a contiunation of the brilliance... Hit: 5 Stars
In a career of brilliant work, some Zappaphiles have called this album a blatant sellout. This is preposterous. This is not a sellout by any stretch of the imagination. It's simply Zappa, one of the most prolific and greatest musicians ever to exist in the US or the world, reinventing himself. There is not one song here that can be called a blatant attempt at top 40 airplay. Every song here display Zappa's sense of humour, sense of satire, and intricate musicianship. My favorites are I'm the Slime (which is still valid today), Caramillo Brillo, and the Zappa classic Dinah Moe-Humm. It's taken a while for Dinah to grow on me, but it has. Zappa once said that thanks to songs like Dinah (and Don't Eat the Yellow Snow and T***ies and Beer), he managed to get enough cash to make his orchestral work (the LSO album in particular). So the album was a hit, but it's still Zappa. It can't be mistaken for anyone else. This is great stuff, yet one more great album in the Zappa universe.
Free Music Review: "...past her fuming incense stencher..." Hit: 5 Stars
This album is an astonishing piece of work. The arrangement, pacing, vocals, song selection, everything on this CD is rock music at its finest.
Zappa was a musical genius and it shows in spades on this album. The tragedy is that essentially none of these cuts received any amount of commercial air play. Compared to most songs that get saturation air play every 10 minutes these seven are nothing less than golden nuggets of musical brilliance. Zappa's lyrics are at times funny, silly, intelligent, zany and witty, also his timing is always perfect. He seems to know exactly when the appropriate moment is to interject his legendary guitar play into various sections of these tracks.
I own seven other Zappa CDs with this one easily being one of the best. Of course he has such an eclectic catalogue that it's impossible to single out one particular album as his best work. Over-nite Sensation is definitely in the top five.
