Free Music Notes for Over-Nite SensationFree Music Review: guitar genius disguised as a humorist Hit: 5 Stars
For the uninitiated, this disc is a must listen along with it's (sort of) companion disc, "Overnight Sensation" which is from the same era and more or less the same band. Non-Zappa fans who are only familiar with radio friendly stuff like "Valley Girl" will be surprised to learn that Frank was an incredibly gifted musician, one of the finest rock guitarists who ever bent a string (faster than a speeding van halen, able to leap prone hendrixes at a single bound) and was backed by arguably the best ensemble(s) ever assembled. Oh yes, you'll laugh, but you'll also get a good idea of why guitarists the world over consider FZ a top-of-the-line guitar god.
Free Music Review: Mental Floss Hit: 5 Stars
Oh, this CD is so much fun. It has delightful characters with polyanna tunes to mask a sardonic silver tongue. DINAH MOE HUMM is a classic character of musical history. It is so much fun to listen to, you hardly notice its feminist lyrics ridiculing male sexuality. Even thinking about it in those terms, the song is still funny. That is just one of the aspects of FZ's genius. FZ was no slouch when it came to playing his guitar either. Still, this is some of the best guitar work on record, and it's not even his best stuff. If you have any interest in Frank Zappa or in Los Angeles guitar music of the early seventies, this album will be interesting to you.
Free Music Review: What is With You Kids? Hit: 5 Stars
This album is ricockulously great. I don't understand why a couple of you said you don't like I'm The Slime because it has has an awesome melody, a cool groove and interesting guitar work. I don't get why that guy said that the live versions of these songs are better because I've always found them to be rushed and lose much of their original feel and lose pretty much all of their groove. George Duke plays some great solos, Jean-Luc Ponty is always a virtuoso violinist and Ruth and Ian underwood are both great as always. In my opinion this is easily one of FZ's greatest albums with many of his best tunes.
Free Music Review: Where's this Dinah-Moe Coming From ? Hit: 5 Stars
What a band this was ! If you can handle the satire and the scatalogical lyrics, this album will please. Remember that Frank used the latter to amplify the former. This album is solid front to back, filled with classic tunes. From Camarillo Brillo to Montana, we are repeatedly slapped in the face with reminders of how fickle the human condition is. If you're not into that stuff, just check out the instrumental excellence - killer guitar solos by FZ and incredible violin solos by Jean Luc Ponty. What a band. Essential.
Free Music Review: A Great Zappa album Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great Zappa album. Camarillo Brillo, I am the Slime, and Dirty Love are all truly great songs and they flow perfectly together. Dirty Love is a classic Zappa tune in that it is funny, but also has lasting replay value because it is such great music. After listening to it several times the humor may fade, but the tune never will. The only song I don't care for on the album was fifty-fifty, a bit too much screaming for my tastes. But the rest of the album more than makes up for it.
