Free Music Notes for Roxy & ElsewhereFree Music Review: This one we played on the bus all through the 70s Hit: 5 Stars
Hi! Remember me...the bus...last tour...the Telefunken U47 with leather and cream cheese? Well I just had to come back to tell you that traveling with the band in the 70s, Frank taught me a lot of stuff...some of it was pretty cranial. But the one thing he used to say is: Knowledge is not wisdom, wisdom is not truth, truth is not beauty, beauty is in the ear of the beholder and music is the best. Pretty deep huh? Well bein' on the bus a lot with Frank and the band, I gotta say this album is his best live music. Really it is! Bizarre!PS; Touring really can make you crazy Bye, Suzie Creamcheese
Free Music Review: Superb Hit: 5 Stars
You know the thrill of experiencing a piece of art for the first time and instantly recognising that it has added value to your life? I'm an admirer of Mr Zappa for two decades and in possession of a substantial part of the canon, but for no apparant reason I never purchased Roxy. As a result, I experienced the album for the first time last Saturday, between 2-3 in the afternoon, while overlooking the Manila Lagoon. It made my day (and the rest of the weekend). This band was COOKING and they knew it! The playing is elevated, skillful, sophisticated, funny and never without a groove. Exceptional!
Free Music Review: What more can I add? Hit: 5 Stars
There really isn't much that I can say that hasn't already been said here. There are 14 reviews listed for this CD as of this date, and not only is the average rating 5 stars, but EACH AND EVERY reviewer gave this CD 5 stars! That should tell you all you need to know. Zappa was a genius, and this was, in my opinion, his finest work. If you're new to Zappa, BUY THIS! If you're already into Zappa, you should hang your head in shame for not already owning it. "This is the one where we need to get all the notes right..." Well, Frank, you did it. Good job. We miss you.
Free Music Review: my all time favourite album Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this album when I was a kid, only 14, 21 years ago. This is the only album I find important enough to buy two times (in CD format now, of course). To those who think "popular" music can't be "classical" I dare ask "should an album one has lissened to about once a week during 20 years not be considered as "classical"? A lot of stuff from this album is played also on the YCDTOS vol 2 (Helsinko concert), but in Helsinki it is played at a higher tempo, and sounds less yazzy. If jou've never heard "Roxy", you're to young to die.
Free Music Review: Live and cooking Hit: 5 Stars
This is an extraordinary album I am about to purchase on CD again. It is probably Frank Zappa's best live work, and one of the best live albums period. I had the good fortune to see him live in the middle 70s in Germany. I still think that apart from Hot Rats the time frame between 72-75 encompased his best work. When he departs from just the social commentary stuff and concentrates on MUSIC he shines, although you are lucky to get both here. As a bonus, you get George Duke and Bruce and Tom Fowler, who in MHO were the backbone and essential element to this band.
