Frank Zappa has had many claims of fame, and is known for being virtually brilliant in many things:

There is the comical side of Frank Zappa - id est Joe's Garage, The Mothers of Invention LPs, etc. Then there's the fusion side of Frank Zappa - the amazing composing and arangements of Frank Zappa's "The Grand Wazoo" and "Burnt Weenie Sandwhich". Then there's the just flat-out excellent musician side of Frank Zappa, such as "Shut up N' Play Yer' Guitar".

This tops off the last of the three major components of Zappa's work. The message behind the album itself is very obvious - he took away the things that were distracting the average listeners from the obvious reasons why his records are so good - THE MUSIC. Sure, the funny lyrics, the neat LP covers, they're all fun and all - but where would Frank Zappa be without his INCREDIBLE musicianship?

Nowhere!

Shut up N Play Yer' Guitar is a miraculous set of his three LPs "Shut up N Play Yer' Guitar", "The Son of Shut Up n Play Yer' Guitar", and "The Return of the Son of Shut Up N' Play Yer' Guitar". They're all equally brilliant and equally creative. Yes, it isn't the most complex of his "group performances" but the guitar playing alone is worth the price of the package. Afterall, it's his blatant way of showing off his tallent. Being a drummer, I do notice the excellent drum works on this track, and the ever-so-slight works of the keyboards and bass players, but the real treat here is the guitaring.

I dare you - sit down in front of your speakers and listen to the record. What did I notice the first instant I did this?

The sound is incredible. As many know, Frank Zappa was an audiophile, and is known for having some of the best rock recordings ever. This is true - how much does this standard hold up to the mastered recordings? No idea, since I only listen to vinyl - but with the media I chose to listen to, it sounds just pure brilliant. Clear highs, pure mids, and really extended lows. The perfect rock recording.

Yes, after I got over the virtuosity of the sound quality of the record, I noticed the music. At first, I was slightly intriqued - I actually got bored the first time listening.

But don't let this stop you! Listen to the record a few times (possibly only the 1st LP, instead of going through all three at once) and you'll grow to love this record. Once you notice how difficult and unique these songs would be to perform, you'll grow a love and appreciation for them. Each song and album is equally engaging, and this means that one should only move to another LP after the previous one is appreciated and noted for its complexity.

Yes, I know that to many fans, this may be a difficult listen at first - but look on the bright side, Frank Zappa also gives an inviting presentation of a music genre that is hardly listened to by the mainstream audience. Full instrumentals can sound as good as, if not more complex, than a regular rock album. It may give way to a whole new world of music, such as acid jazz and classical, where there is hardly any repeated melody! The possibilities regarding this record is practically endless.

Take a day to listen to the entire album straight through, and I know for a fact that you will feel you are a better person for doing it. For true musicians and for those who truly want to appreciate good music, there is hardly any argument here that time can't be better spent than listening to this record.
