Free Music Review: Waka/Jawaka Is FZ At His Prime
Hit: 4 Stars

I'm not a Zappa-o'phile but this album is a gem. "Big Swifty" and "Waka/Jawaka" are some of the finest jazz fusion you will ever hear. You are listening to Zappa in his prime. Not everything Zappa has done is this good. Much of FZ's material is a little too silly for me as he learned to play up the bizzare to sell albums. Waka/Jawaka is as good as Hot Rats or Grand Wazoo. Jazz From Hell is another very challenging FZ album that I recommend. I had always hoped that Zappa would focus more on improvisional jazz fusion rather than the goofy and the gross. Zappa was a HUGE talent that got too caught up in anti-establishment baiting.

Free Music Review: Did somebody say fusion?
Hit: 4 Stars

A very underrated album. I just love the long jams in Big Swifty and Waka/Jawaka. The melodies at the begining of those two are very interesting if you listen closely. I love how the akward bass part for Waka/Jawaka was incorperated. The interplay between the instruments during those jams are incredible. Very jazzy of an album. Your Mouth and IJMba1SD are good songs to add variation to the album. I love the steel guitar solo in IJMba1SD. If you are a jazz enthusiest and like other stuff by Zappa, this album is for you. It has the musical genius of Zappa worked into some all out jazz jams.

Free Music Review: Big Swifty is born here
Hit: 4 Stars

this CD is pretty good. The song Big Swifty really takes on more meaning as frank would tour and change the construction of the song live. I recommend buying this to hear where it started and then get different bands throughout his long CD collection (YCDTOSA versions TBBYNHIYL and MAJNH are good examples -see his catalog and you will know what those stand for)a good recording, but like I said, these songs breath better live.

Free Music Review: A complex work you can appreciate by listening carefully
Hit: 4 Stars

It's difficult to appreciate it at its first listen, but after being in the habit with his experimental stuff, this album can be essential in every "prog collection", even though the whole material is a bit out of such "progressive genre"...I suggest you to listen to every song carefully, and then you can enter his magical world more easily!!
Recommended!!

Free Music Review: Experiments can go both ways...for Frank, it was mostly gold
Hit: 4 Stars

I love this album, though it is dense and not a common listen. 'Big Swifty' and the title track are unreal, and Don Preston sounds like Mahavishnu's Jan Hammer on 'Birds of Fire.' Like the other guy said, get the Wazoo and Hot Rats first...this one will take some breaking in but is worth the effort.
