Free Music Notes for Zappa in New York

Free Music Review: One of Zappa's Best
Hit: 5 Stars

I also was fortunate to see this concert tour. In fact it was my first experience with Zappa live (4 more times to follow). I remember beiing awestruck by the musicianship while laughing MAO at the lyrics and stage antics. I am a drummer so this album is particularly important because it contains the first recording of The Black Page, a notoriously difficult drumset arrangement and the piece that really put drummer Terry Bozzio on the map. The other high point for me on this recording is the astonshing brilliant vocals of Ray White on The Illonois Enema Bandit. It's something like a perverted gospel clasic.

Free Music Review: zappa at his best
Hit: 5 Stars

I still remember Terry Bozio putting on his devil mask at the Hammersmith Odeon. This record was made in NY, but we also got to hear it in London.

This, like the Roxy or YCDTOSA vol2, is one of those fantastic live performances which brings it all together. A unique band (Brecker Brothers luxury included) and some fantastic material, including the first version of a Zappa Classical CLassic, The Black Page.

When you put that piece next to big leg Emma, you get a real Zappa record. In this CD a number of welcome (if not essential) tracks are added to the original vynil.

A fantastic record.

Free Music Review: great
Hit: 5 Stars

After the YCDTOSA albums this was the first live cd I got, and it's actually from one concert (or, at least, from one week of concerts). Great band, with, like the 1988 band a lot of jazz influences. First live album with Terry Bozzio on drums.

Nice choice of tunes. Zappa was establishing his reputation for completely changing the arrangements of well known songs. A major example here is I'm the slime, which is a great reworking of a favorite song. Nice liner notes too. Pretty silly to find out that Punky's whips was deemed offensive, even in the USA, even in the 70's...

Free Music Review: My favorite by Frank!
Hit: 5 Stars

Only two reviews?! Hmmm... For over 20 years I've loved this album, which features some of Frank's best instrumental numbers performed by one of his best line-ups (Eddie Jobson, Patrick O'Hearn, Brecker Bros., etc.) at NYC's Palladium on Halloween 1976. COOKIN' BAND! Terry Bozzio at 18 was a freaking tornado on songs like "Black Page" and "Manx Needs Women". Don Pardo makes a special appearance. Also, check out the video "Baby Snakes", which is the Halloween '77 performance at NYC's Palladium. There's only one FZ!

Free Music Review: Some timeless pieces of orchestral jazz
Hit: 5 Stars

Having recently revisited my Zappa vinyl, New York is a standout for three reasons - Black Page, Black Page, and Purple Lagoon. Live orchestral jazz that has remained on medium rotation for me over the decades, pieces that may take a a few listens but reward with depth of composition, melody and the range of the musicians, whipped by Herr maestro Zappa, into pulling out the stops. Beyond "worthwhile listening" (my four star standard), I would argue these pieces alone make New York "essential" (my five star standard).
