Free Music Review: Franz Ferdinand: You Could Have It So Much Better (Domino/Epic)
Hit: 5 Stars

We knew Franz Ferdinand was a love gang to be reckoned with, if you dare. But who knew that the bouncy infectious band was so sure that they have topped themselves? Alex Kapranos once told us to "Throw away the last one. Cleanse your mind." I'm sure by that, we are just begging to hear this friggin' album they have been boasting about even with their title (which changed after we started grasping the concept of the last title).

This album kicks off with "The Fallen", and it sounds like where the last album started off soft and sultry, they are trying to just hit you with the Part 2. The last album stopped with "40"" which is not much of an ending we wanted. So here comes the next saga for this one. To me, "The Fallen" would be a fast favorite for everyone and be a fast favorite to the others, too. "They're going to say "troubled boy" just because you like to destroy all the things that brings te idiots joy, well what's wrong with a little destruction?" The song isn't as bouncy as I predicted. Yet, I am getting a little (I said, a little!) bored of the last debut. Next comes that friggin future hit of a anthem for partygoers (especially since Alex wrote the song after a party) "Do You Want To?" The thing that may strike this is an out of mind experience is wondering how was it that "Well, do you/Do yay do ya wanna/Wanna go/Where I never let you before?" became a pickup line. Nonetheless, you find it funny the line "Well, he's a frined and he's so proud of you/A famous friend, well I B*** him before you." Don't you?

Now with "This Boy", you would at least expect a softer start. But they hit you with a bouncy one that, truthfully, some fans will like and some fans will find OK, but Franz has too much mmunition to let you hate it. Especially for a song that is approximately 2:30 (really 21 seconds) long. But for me, at the end is where everything ends up falling into place where the narration is supposed to be from a little boy, because the ending was a little..appropriate but kills the mood just a bit. "Walk Away" starts off Franz and and the verses turns down the microburner a bit more. If you were looking for a "Jacqueline" or a "Cheating on You", "Walk Away is as close as you are going to get."

Now how many people have ever seen a mosh pit at a Franz Ferdinand concert? Well, I have a feeling "Evil and a Heathen" will really do the trick for the likes of us. Becuase if you lsiten to the song, you will agree that bouncy will not do this justice. Along with "The Fallen", I think this will be a fast favorite with the fans, too. It already is with me. Until "You're The Reason I'm Leaving", you never expected a more straightforward breakup song with such attitude, ever since the song that made them an anti-hero "Cheating On You". "Eleanor, Put Your Boots On", which the bigwig reviewers would call a song dedicated to Eleanor Friedberger of The Fiery Furnaces. Now of course, I have never expected a song you can't dance to from Frand Ferdinand. But it seems that this is no exception to a good one. It even has Piano, and sounds a bit like they have a little Fiery Furnaces in them. I think the song is a 3/4th mediocre. It is not worth skipping. "Well, That Was Easy" wasn't it? Just joking, "Well, That Was Easy" has the art-rock band snapping straight back to infecting your eardrums with catchy songs. The song to me is just him getting through missing the one he loves. Hard as it is to say that the attempt is easy for some. Soon enough you will beggin to Franz to "C'mon kill me now/Kill me now!"

"What You Meant" is a song that I would end up skipping a bit. "I'm Your Villain" starts off really surprising and evil that I am claiming predictions that you will hate them for it. The song is going to make you really bob your head or surprise you as much. Mostly, beg for a visit to Lacuna Inc for a way to get them out of your head, so you can start the process all over again.

At this point, I feel as if I don't really need to listen to more, but I have to. It is my job to look out for holes in such pretty balloons. The title track is OK. Some people will call this another "Michael". To tell you the truth, as fun as it is to take a listen,, we may need it a lot better. "Fade Together" is a beautiful take on a lush dream. To tell you the truth, I know their potential and I didn't think they could really pull off soft songs, but this song needs to be hit repeat. Not only that, but a separate side of great hits. They end on a party favor of a song and a way of leaving you hanging (again!) "Outsiders". OK. Nevermind. The CD ended with a fadeout instead of a scrape on your forehead but when you listen to this song, you still have a feeling the Fran Ferdinand was holding out on the songs. They will be like Krispy Kremes for the ears. No longer the Dunkin' Donuts.

In conclusion, their album says You Could Have It So Much Better, and it seems they did it by spreading their sound and making a spectacle out of being art-rock party scientists. Normally, I would hate CDs that start and finish off a smash the whole way, but as you can see Franz Ferdinand may have a right to be cocky. They just made you start a brutal nuclear World War V in your own bedroom.

You Could Have It So Much Better Poster

Franz Ferdinand's eagerly-awaited second album You Could Have It So Much Better. Co-produced by the band and Rich Costey, and recorded in both rural Scotland and at Avatar Studios in NYC, the album features 13 brand new tracks including 'Do You Want To'. Sony. 2005.
After more than a year spent on the road behind their breakthrough self-titled debut--just how many times can Alex Kapranos sing "Take Me Out" without getting his skinny tie into a knot, anyway?--you might expect the members of Franz Ferdinand to feel a little frayed around the edges. But if You Could Have It So Much Better was supposed to be a bloated sophomore album focusing on bad airline meals and cold hotel swimming pools, somebody forgot to tell the Mercury Music Prize winning Scottish quartet. Instead, the Franzies return with a disc packed with thrilling punk-pop treatises like the single "Do You Want To," political rabble-rousers such as opener "The Fallen," and lovely psychedelic ballads that explore the common ground between the Beatles and Bowie, like "Eleanor Put You Boots On" (about Eleanor Freidberger of the Fiery Furnaces, no less). It's a stunning, confident piece of work that suggests the band is merely getting started. --Aidin Vaziri
