Free Music Review: Seminal Jazz Fusion Classic

Here are my thoughts on Freddie Hubbard's classic album Red Clay released in 1970 produced by Creed Taylor for the new at the time CTI label. This was Freddie's first album for CTI & it's considered by myself & many, many people to be one of Hubbard's finest albums. First off the supporting cast reads like a who's who of jazz. Herbie Hancock on fender rhodes,Ron Carter on electric & acoustic bass,Lenny White on drums & Joe Henderson on tenor sax & alto flute. This album definitely falls into line with the other great fusion of the period Miles Davis's Bitch's Brew & Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band but in my opinion where the latter albums where a bit more abstract with touches of avant garde Red Clay is a bit more accessible and grooving one of the first fusions of R&B & Funk with post-bop. The title lead off track has become a standard piece for aspiring jazz & fusion musicians. It's Hubbard's catchy melody set to the chord changes of the 1966 R&B hit Sonny with a classic bass hook by Carter that is maybe more recognizable than the melody most notably being sampled in 1994 by hip hop artists A Tribe Called Quest for their Midnight Marauders album. The track has searing solos by Hubbard, Hancock & Henderson clocking at twelve minutes & change despite the tracks length it holds the listeners attention. This album holds something for everyone ambient trance inducing blues soaked ballads such as Delphia with Hancock moving to organ & Henderson to flute. Suite Sioux is a shifting piece from its jaunty, refined head to solos in all out swing mode with Lenny White laying down some serious chops marked by sudden tempo shifts along the way a true hybrid of quintessential soul-jazz & hard bop, Freddie's soloing is heroic either laying back on top of walking blues patterns or double-timing on up tempo passages showing us just how bad he really was. White also throws down a unaccompanied drum solo to Suite Sioux. The closer & my personal favorite, along side the title track is Intrepid Fox which contains the groups most muscular playing of the session paced by Carter's furious walking bass lines on upright in tandem with White's incessantly swinging Tony Williams inspired ride cymbal work matched with a killer knotty bop inflected melody blasted by Hubbard. A awesome track & overall a killer album that contains some of Hubbard's most inspired playing taking the trumpet to new heights of technical & emotional virtuosity with flashes of lyrical beauty which in my opinion has never been equaled. This album represents the best qualities of jazz fusion music as well as post bop, and now forty years old this album still sounds fresh & vital today which represents in my opinion a true timeless music. Get this album if your into great original jazz. A true classic!
