Free Music Notes for BarcelonaFree Music Review: Classic Mercury Hit: 5 Stars
I own the original Polydor release from '88. I found this album to be a very pleasant surprise indeed. Mercury filled his "down" time with Queen in a quite productive way, and satistified his longing to perform with someone he apparently admired greatly. A nice bonus with this disc is the digital remake/re-release of his "Great Pretender" (the original 45/LP-single) B-side there titled "Exercises in Free Love", a wordless operatic, yet rather moving piece I greatly enjoyed. One of my favorite pieces from the album is "Guide Me Home". This work was a natural progression for Mercury's obvious love for artful, harmonious vocalizations. I'm really not a true opera fan, but this pseudo opera is something no Queen fan should be without. Enjoy!

All I can say is, WOW. This amazing album defies categorization. The only thing that can unarguably be said of it is that it is absolutely excellent music. My personal favorite on this album is "La Japonaise", which has a beautiful melody, complimented by some truly gorgeous harmony. "Ensueno" is, quite simply, perfect. "Guide Me Home" is a heartfelt appeal for the serenity of a peaceful end to a long, wearying journey, seguing into the lovely "How Can I Go On". The voices of Caballe and Mercury complement each other marvelously; no one would regret having this work of beauty in their collection. And for all of us who've always said Freddie should have been in opera, this glorious piece of music is a gift we've waited for all our lives.
Free Music Review: Soooo Glad I Have Discovered This Hit: 5 Stars
I'm 62 and believe it or not, I had barely heard of Queen. I thought Freddie Mercury was probably another Frankie Valli. This music was a brave venture by a rock star and when I listen to it, I'm transported to heaven. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. I will be driving in my car listening and discover that my mouth is WIDE open with awe. But, as the other reviewers wrote, a tad uneven. Not a big fan of the gospel turn. I agree that La Japonaise is the best, also Barcelona, Guide Me Home, and How Can I Go On? Nobody should miss this, just proves once again what a genius Mercury was. Monserrat Caballe is divine also. It did take me about 3 or 4 listens before I began to "get" it, it is so unconventional. As usual he struggles with the big issues, with his entire great heart.
Free Music Review: Found a treasure after 17 years... Hit: 5 Stars
I discovered this recording this year and I guess 17 years after release is better than never. This is an incredible, and I mean incredible recording by two of the most talented performers of the 21st century. The chemistry between Montserrat and Freddie is not only obvious, but it is perilous and shows clearly in their performance. This is a must have for any music fan.
I still get misty-eyed whenever I hear Freddie and just can't help but think what an incredible loss the music world suffered when he left us in 1991. Recently he was named in the top 100 vocalists of all time at number 18, by Rolling Stone. I'm glad they recognize his extraordinary talent and his pioneering influence on the music we listen to today.
Free Music Review: The best of 2 worlds! Updated, 09-23-09 Hit: 5 Stars
I write as a classical singer. The professional collaboration and personal friendship of these two immensely--as well as differently--endowed musicians is a gift to the world. Listen to some of their rehearsal tapes, and you will appreciate the concerts even more. It is in these rehearsals, when they improvise, experiment and brainstorm, that you can truly appreciate the artistry. Their ability to match and complement their two amazing voices is an artistic inspiration. Do yourself a favor, and listen to some of Caballe's comments on Mercury telling her about his illness. It brings even more meaning to those miraculous duets.
Update: Videos of some of the songs are on Lover of Life, Singer of Songs, DVD format. Nice!
