Free Music Review: Of the
Hit: 4 Stars

Of the three members of Queen who went solo Freddie Mercury was, is and likly always will be the most popular and best. Thats not just because efforts like Brian Mays Back To The Light is boring and Roger Taylors attempt at capturing Queens 70s style Space Frontiers falls flat, but also because Freddie Mercury wrote most of Queens songs (Including The Miracle and Innuendo, check out the Official Queen Site for details 54 songs to Brian Mays 51) as well as most of Queens hits (and you cant argue about the value of songs like We Are The Champians and Somebody To Love). Freddie Mercury needed Queen?! Im surprized at anyone who thinks so, just listen to You Take My Breath Away (Live) and My Melencholy Blues and find thats not the case. Queen needed Freddie. Brian May himself said without Freddie Mercury thier is no Queen, Mercury therefore prooved that he did not need Queen, he was Queen to a huge extent (and lets not forget it was Mercury who gave the band its name). This collection really shows why Queen chose Mercury as frontman. He was an incredible singer and songwriter akin to John Lennon (though he lived to be 5 years older then John and had a shorter solo career but longer one with his band). Theres only slight misfires that Mercury had, his few covers and some dance related stuff, I also wonder if he could have played a bit more piano but for the most part he was an artist of grandious perfection. One more thing: to listen to Freddie and miss the musical talents of the other members of Queen is pointless and stupid. Its like listening to John Lennon and missing Pauls bass, Ringos drums and Georges guitar or Peter Gabriel and missing Tonys keyboards, Mikes bass, Phils drumming and Steves guitar. As much as I like Queen I missed nothing of Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. Freddie used mainly competent musicians anyhow (check out Mr. Bad guy) who supported his style well.

Free Music Review: Good acquisition for the economically impaired
Hit: 4 Stars

First of all, the display picture is inaccurate; It refers to the 10 CD + 2 DVD British edition of the complete solo recordings.

This 3 CD (2 1/2) collection brings back to life a remastered version of the exquisite "Barcelona", and the rare, melodic and strong "Mr. Bad Guy". The sound is crystal clear, and it does pay up for its price.

An excellent choice for the Mercury fan who won't spend 120+ on 10 CDs which can be "resumed" in this edition. I would recommend getting both "The Great Pretender" and "The Freddie Mercury Album" as accompanying audio selections and "The Freddie Mercury Video Collection DVD" for viewing pleasure. A great gift for a friend, lover or relative.

Free Music Review: Freddie Will Live 4Ever
Hit: 4 Stars

As long as there are humans and electricity on this over congested earth, Freddy's voice will be heard loud and clear, and that is a plus. The passion and fun of this collection is worth listening when the world seems such a funked place. Lond Live Freddy...

Free Music Review: Would it be the best CD collection to you?
Hit: 3 Stars

I have very strange feeling when listened to Freddie's first solo album: Mr Bay Guy. The same old vocal are presented but I cannot find any good reason to be persuaded that this is one of the best album by Freddie Mercury.

After all these years, I must say Freddie Mercury is not suitable to be alone on the road of his singer career. His musical talent only be bright when the rest of Queen are by his side. As a fan of Queen, in hearing the album Mr Bad Guy, I will miss the guitar of Brian May, the bass of John Deacon, and also the percussion of Roger Taylor. Perhaps, Queen has really obtained the huge success; even Mercury cannot find a new way to advance his own.

The "Solo" collection has 3 CDs contained but only few song are worth to hear, for instance: Barcelona, Living On My Own and Great Pretender. However, you can still find these song in "Queen: greatest hits III". In the mean time, British EMI has released the re-package box set of previous three volume greatest hits. I don't recommended the Queen box either, however if you want to memorial the good old days of Freddie Mercury, the new box of Queen seems better than the "Solo" collection.

The "Solo" collection would be much appreciated by the die hard Freddie's fan; but not for general audience and the Queen fans.

3 stars to the special package, it is really better than the European version.

Free Music Review: Get "The Solo Collection" Instead
Hit: 2 Stars

As someone commented earlier, it is pretty unfortunate that Hollywood Records only chose to release this 3-CD set, as opposed to the far superior 10-CD set that includes 2 DVDs.

Yes, it is exciting to have the long since deleted "Mr. Bad Guy", and "Barcelona", which is by far one of the most beautiful and heartfelt pieces of music ever written. However, once one has listened to these CDs and enjoyed them, it's hard to not want more. Especially knowing that a 10-CD set exists, with all the exciting demos and Freddie's solo videos.

If I were Hollywood Records, and I wanted to produce a scaled down version of the bigger box set, for people who aren't willing to spend over $100, I would have made the bonus CD have been a sort of "highlights" complilation of the best demos and rare tracks from "The Solo Collection". Instead, we are given tracks that most Freddie fans have known about for a while. Again, you're left hungry for the special features on the 10-CD set.

Needless to say, I returned this set, and opted for the 10-CD set. I know it's a lot more money, but if you're a die-hard Freddie fan, it's worth it without a doubt. It's just too bad that Hollywood Records didn't come through for us American fans on this one.
