Free Music Review: Astonishingly good McCartney remix album
Hit: 5 Stars

First, let me recommend that you buy a copy of this album without delay -- it's excellent, and EMI has apparently said that after the initial vinyl pressing sells out, no more copies will be made. I can't figure why this hasn't been released more widely (and on CD and/or MP3, please!), because it shows Paul at his very best -- experimental, playful, and unstoppably melodic.

The double album includes 12 tracks, 11 of which are remixes of previously released songs. The twelfth song, "Lalula," is new, but includes some instrumental samples from "Old Siam, Sir" and "Oh Woman, Oh Why." "Twin Freaks" is a coproduction by McCartney and DJ Freelance Hellraiser, who toured Europe with McCartney in 2004 and opened shows with remixes. And this DJ's mixes ROCK. There's not a mediocre track on the album, and they're not mixes with one or two added elements; they're radical reworkings. One huge plus is that the funky, melodic bass lines on all these tracks are mixed so that you can hear every nuance. Beautiful.

Here's the track listing:
Side A: "Really Love You," "Long Haired Lady (Reprise)," "Rinse the Raindrops"
Side B: "Darkroom," "Live and Let Die," "Temporary Secretary"
Side C: "What's That You're Doing," "Oh Woman, Oh Why," "Mumbo"
Side D: "Lalula," "Coming Up," "Maybe I'm Amazed"

These mixes are harder rocking than other dance versions of McCartney's work. Without sounding at all like the recent Fireman release "Electric Arguments," the tracks have a similar sense of joyful experimentation, perhaps because in each case McCartney found a congenial and inventive collaborator.

Some notes on specific songs:
The emotional range of Paul's vocals on "Really Love You" is amazing. Combined with the driving beat, they create an irresistible, smart dance tune you won't be able to get out of your head.

Both "Long Haired Lady" and "Rinse the Raindrops" reveal possibilities not fully explored in the original mixes. This version of "Rinse the Raindrops" is even better than the original.

"Darkroom" and "Temporary Secretary" are also great dance tunes, but it's "Live and Let Die" that stands out on side B. It includes samples of fans talking about the Beatles, combined with the first words of "Live and Let Die" -- "When you were young" -- and the effect is moving, even haunting.

Side C's "Oh Woman, Oh Why" takes a similar tack, mixing comments by Paul and Linda about Wings concerts with samples from "Venus and Mars," "Band on the Run," and "Loup (1st Indian on the Moon)." It's a sonic love letter to time past, and to Linda, that comes together beautifully. This side's mix of "What's That You're Doing" is superior to the one on "Tug of War," and this version of "Mumbo" (originally on "Wild Life") sounds like Paul meeting the "Stop Making Sense" era Talking Heads and throwing a big party with them.

After all this, you get to side D and find that the very best is saved for last. "Lalula" is a worldbeat dance party with a wicked McCartney bass line, and you just haven't fully heard "Coming Up" or "Maybe I'm Amazed" until you've heard these mixes. They're gloriously spacious, and you can hear every detail -- the pounding piano in "Maybe I'm Amazed" sounds like it's right next to you -- and Paul's vocals are again unbelievably flexible and powerful. (Right now this mix of "Maybe I'm Amazed is up on YouTube -- check it out, if it's still there when you read this.)

The package is beautiful, too. The gatefold double album features one of McCartney's paintings, details from which are also reproduced on the record labels. And the records are wonderful heavyweight vinyl.

Carpe diem!
