Free Music Review: Best find of 2008: Friendly Fires

Friendly Fires is the best band I came across in 2008. Found it through the magnificent everlasting beauty of 'Paris'. Also listen to the great outro of the song. It's the wonderful world of music after such an also rhythmic song. And...how about the opener 'Jump in the Pool', 'Skeleton Boy', the hauntingly beautiful 'Strobe' which by itself I can play all day long and still be as touched. The only weaker song I find is 'On Board'. Annoying enough it is situated right after the beautiful 'Strobe'. Sometimes...I wish bands did their arranging of the tracks a little better.
The sound is as fresh as XTC, with a sparkle of New Rave, with cowbells like the fab New York band Liquid Liquid from the early 80's. But the atmosphere is really their own, and it really grabs me.
I saw them live in Amsterdam in March 2009. I knew them through YouTube, and loved the gig. I wish I owned the album before to fully enjoy the songs. You'll find a great live track on YouTube called 'Your Love', which is a kind of moody Gang of Four with a touch more feel to it. They do tend to sound a bit smoother. It's more the pop of XTC mingled with a New Rave approach. But, they're not slaves to that. Listen to the build up of 'White Diamonds', and you know what I mean.
I already love them, as if they were 'mine' for years, like I do with my old favorite bands. Enjoy Friendly Fires. Let yourself get caught by their feel good music.

One of the most exciting bands from the UK. Last year's super limited 7-inch "Paris" was judged the single of the week in both the NME and The Guardian for its deft combination of clattering percussion and a blissed-out, hum-along hook. Other songs on Friendly Fires contain driving punk funk grooves with unstoppable pop melodies, joyous vocals, wonky waltz-like rhythms, and My Bloody Valentine atmospherics.
