Free Music Review: An old style with a new twist

Artificial Soldier and Civilization are FLA's best two albums since the early 90's, bar none. While Civilization was a synthesis of different styles, Artificial Soldier is a refinement of the classic, hard-hitting FLA trademark of aggressive synths alongside distorted guitar and complex drum programming. Unlike Implode and Epitaph, which were two of their worst albums, Artificial Soldier is a throwback to the peak of their career, unafraid to unleash the sort of dystopian nightmares that characterized their best work.
However, some people see this sort of return to form as a rehashing of older work. I hate to burst their bubble, but this certainly isn't Hard Wired Redux. Even if many of the same elements are in place, there is enough innovation and influence from other projects to place it firmly outside history. There are lots of flourishes, both in instrument choice and in style, that serve to show how this album is definitely from a more mature and diverse band than the FLA of 1995. There are strings, smooth synths, and actual singing -- not just growling or screaming or speaking -- that show not just the old-fashioned FLA but a band who, having experimented with diversity on Civilization, decides to take that sort of eclecticism to task on its traditional style, and to great effect.

The best FLA release the electronic industrial community has seen in over a decade. Heavy pounding beats, atmospheric strings, percolating melodies, dynamic synths, and Bill Leeb's trademark vocals couldn't be fused together any tighter if you tried to do it at an atomic level. As if all those factors weren't enough, two guest vocalists appear: Eskil Simonsson from Covenant and Jean-Luc De Meyer from Front 242.International Music CDs
