Free Music Review: A difficult album to review

First off, let me just say this is my personal favorite Fuel album. This is the first in their collection that I don't skip a track for (except the pointless "Mess," which is 13 seconds of BS). They've made better songs than these in the past, but they also had some stinkers on their older CDs, so that's where this one has a leg up. The album's haters seem to really miss Brian Scallions and give Toryn Green a lot of flack. In the album notes, Toryn talks about what a huge fan of Fuel he was and gives respect to Scallions. What's more, he sings his heart out and even sounds a lot like Scallions, so upon learning this, it's hard not to like the new guy. A second critique commonly given to this CD is that Fuel now resorts to screaming curse words. I only counted two on my listens, and they're used in an angry context, which is when curse words are supposed to be used. Third critique is this CD's more pop than the older music, and that is true, but it actually seems to fit this band well.
Chances are, Fuel fans who don't care about the roster changes much will love this CD and those who do won't. That's how it is, I wish more open minds could prevail. For cool, straight-ahead modern rock music, this is a quality album, regardless of the individuals who put it together.
