Free Music Review: Potential...Potential...Potential...Now Where Is The Follow Up Album (4.5 stars)

A lot of people have heard of G. Dep's debut "Child Of The Ghetto" but decided to use it as a pillow and slept on it. Why, it questions me. The album to me is a good job, by Bad Boy's lesser known members.
Okay, when he came out with "Lets Get It", many listeners were thinking..."I was born ready/and I was already on fish and spaghetti" (?!?!?)...but anyway, the song was a good dance song for the summer of 2001. G.Dep has some lyrical skills to back him up, as he tries to get his voice heard on "Everyday" and his biggest hit as of today "Special Delivery" (If you remember the video, P. Diddy yells continiously. He doesn't do that on the album version). Another banger to me is "Danger Zone" which is backed by a nice beat. I think the girl is Lady May (I'm not sure...I can't find my linear book) on the song "Smash On The First Night" as G.Dep tries to get some on the first night, but she says no.
As I said before, G.Dep has rhymes, and he shows it well on the recreation of Eric B. & Rakim's "Microphone Fiend" and makes it the song "Dough Fiend". What I like about that song is that he doesn't exactly copy their rhymes like many artists who do the same thing, but he flips them around and rhymes about making money, but keeps the same format as the origonal song. Speaking of Rakim, he and Kool G. Rap appear on the song "I Am" that is another great song. Other notable guest appearances are Mark Curry, Loon, and Kain (new commers of Bad Boy Roster at the time) on the "Lets Get It (remix)" and "Blast Off".
I myself enjoyed this album very much. I don't understand why people dismiss G.Dep because of one or two lyrical errors. If they actually heard the album, they will probably like it. I recommend giving it a try.
If you didn't know already, some of these tracks appear on P. Diddy's "Bad Boy: The Saga Continues". My only knock is that he could have recorded some newer tracks between the two albums or added "Hit 'Em High" and good mixtape joint that I heard before the album's release by him.

As one of the last few shining lights at Puff's crumbling Bad Boy empire, G-Dep's crisp, conversational flow was expected to help fill the gaping hole left at the label by the death of Biggie and resignation of the LOX. Interestingly, Dep's solo debut actually does a decent job (along with Black Rob's Life Story) of further cementing Puff's rep as a great spotter of talent. G-Dep cashes in on the street buzz that has been festering since his performances on the Bad Boy compilation The Saga Continues... on "Special Delivery," a modest head-nodder with its minimalist loop and drum programs--Puff ad-libs notwithstanding. On "I Am," which teams up arguably two of the greatest MCs of all time (Rakim and Kool G Rap) with Dep, and the Depster more than holds his own. "Keep It Gangsta" features an introspective Shyne waxing cryptically about the court case that got him locked down, and the clubby "Smash on the First Night" is another one of those must-hear gems. Still, the album has problem areas. Why lazily lift a loop from Eric B and Rakim's classic "Microphone Fiend" on "Doe Fiend"? And why do two of the best joints on this album ("Lets Get It," "Child of the Ghetto") already appear on the The Saga Continues...? --Dalton HigginsRap & Hip-Hop Music CDs
