Free Music Review: Whipped that Special Sauce Together

You might have heard G Love & Special Sauce from their previous CDs, G Love & Special Sauce, Coast to Coast Motel, and Yeah it's That Easy, but their new studio recorded CD Philadelphonic combines a mixture of rap, rock, blues, jazz, and mellow grooves. The first time I put this CD into the player I kept trying to sing with the words even though I had never heard it before. As the notes surrounded me, I felt as if they were playing just for me, and my heart started to keep the same beat as the bass guitar. No part of me could keep still, and I had to keep the flow of the grooves throughout my entire body. It gave me the feeling that you get your biorhythms are soaring and nothing can bring you down. Most of the songs on the CD have either an introduction before the song, or some type of speech inside the song. The song Roaches starts off, "(telephone ring, telephone ring, Please leave a message please, leave me a message, LEAVE A MESSAGE!" And then goes into a funk groove that has a Jamaican New York City feel, as they sing about how cockroaches have invaded their apartment, and ending with the sounds of dogs barking. Rodeo Clowns comes across as a rocky jazz sound, with a mean guitar and whistling solo, and the simple bass guitar accompanist will have you moving with the groove and singing more bass notes, you'll feel is if you are part of the song. Relax gives you the sensation as if you had just been tripping as the tunes make your surrounds being to melt to the floor and dandelions dance across the room. If you don't get completely lost in the melting grooves then you probably aren't actually listening. Kick Drum is what you'd be hearing and seeing on late night Skinamax, as they talk about oral sex, when you hear it you'll understand. When you go clubbing on a Friday night, and try macing it with a whole bunch of girls is what Friday Night will make you remember. Its got a sexy melody and bass line just as if you were in a club on a Friday night, and is a perfect song to use for a project on Bill Clinton for the Monica Lewinski scene (or use Kick Drum). The song Love is a mellower rap song, as he describes how everyone is leaving this small town and looking for better things, but all that he wants is some love. He tells his story with the same base line and about five different notes repeated on the guitar. The last track Gimme Some Lovin' has an upbeat Saturday morning cartoon feel but with an adult topic. For such a simple song it has become one of my favorites on the CD, with a few guitar solos mixed in. And if you have the patience to wait (and if you don't fast forward) four an a half minutes you can hear the hidden track Amazing, which you have to hear to understand the title. For most of the songs co-written by G Love he has no fear of trying something new, or mixing all different genres of music. Whipped together it is an awesome collection of tracks, and highly recommended for your listening pleasure, but you'll be missing it if you ever let a certain teach borrow it for a few days. They definitely mixed up a batch of their special sauce for this CD.

It's not terribly surprising that G. Love and Special Sauce were tapped to fill in for Sugar Ray when the band dropped out of Woodstock '99. It's not simply because of the smooth, muscle-shirted frontmen, but also because the same kind of easy soul, funk, and rap influences wash over their stronger cuts. The calypsolike "Rodeo Clowns" on Philadelphonic feeds on that radio-friendly vibe, all sunshine and broken hearts. Unfortunately, that cut is one of the few high points this time out. While it's nice to see G. Love step away from emulating Will Smith, which sank Yeah, It's That Easy, the answer to stronger material is not to try and channel Jamiroquai through Love's nasal Philly-soaked stoner raps ("Dreamin'"). But even more than that, this boy needs to get away from spacey soul jams, and fast--"Relax" sounds like G. fell asleep with a mouthful of syrup and woke up in love. --Jason JosephesAlternative Rock Music CDs
