Free Music Review: THE CRITICS WERE WRONG!

I was shocked to hear that Beautiful Garbage was recieved none to well by fans and critics alike. I had no idea of the backlash this album brought about. This album was so unpopular that Garbage doesn't even include any of the songs in their live act now...only on rare occasions. There was a fansite back in the day that was probably the BEST fansite I'd ever seen...always updated, full of all kinds of great stuff. But after the release of this third album, the guy hung it up...said he hated the album...and hated Shirley's new look (she had cut all her hair off and bleached it blonde) I was just in shock at HOW these people could say this album was less than perfect. My first time listening to Beautiful Garbage was an automatic feeling of joy. I had been a die hard fan since their first release in 1995 and of course, was counting down the days till this one was released. The band really strethced themselves with this album. They were experiementing even more and Shirley was pushing herself to vocal ranges no one thought she was capable of reaching. Shirley's vocals on this album are byfar the BEST she's ever done. And the lyrics on this album are more personal and heartfelt than anything she's ever written. Shirley has opened her veins for us on this release. This album has all sorts of diverse genres laced all the way through it. THere is so much influence from music of the past, present and somehow...the future. If you are ONLY thinking about getting this album...stop...just buy it! The critics and the unloyal fans must have had lobotomies before listening to this release. I saw the band live a few months back and met the band backstage...nearly every single fan told them..."I don't care what the critics said, Beautiful Garbage was beautiful" and when Shirley took one song request...it was a song from Beautiful Garbage that they played. Here's a breakdown on the songs and what they are:
1. Shut Your Mouth: An electronic, hip-hop opener where Shirley pretty much RAPS! It's an attacking, hard edged explosion of techno and heavy guitar rock! Shirley seems to be attacking the nay sayers on this track, almost assaulting the media...perhaps that's why they hated the album...hmmmm? The song to me seems to be about how the media and the public love you one minute, and hate you the next and are always trying to know as much about you and spread it all over the place.
2. Androgyny: The first single and well deserving. This song is futuristic in it's electronica style. Classic Garbage single. The title says it all about the subject matter.
3. Can't Cry These Tears: One of my favorites. A tribute to Phil Spector and the girl groups of the 1960's with over-the-top scoring with wedding bells and other effects of that nature. Imagine The Ronnetts in the 23rd century. Shirley blew me away with her vocals on this song...she even said it stressed her abilities on this one. The song almost seems to reflect Shirley's place at the time of writing the album. She had sought therapy after Version 2.0 to work out her problems and had had an awakening...she had learned to deal with her insecurities and she displays that with lines like: "I just don't care anymore...I've reached the end of the road, I just don't care anymore...won't cry these tears anymore!"
4. Till the Day I Die: Not one of my favorites on the album, but still a decent track. Some very cool effects on this one.
5. Cup of Coffee: Could be my favorite on the album. This is the saddest song I've ever heard...you can feel the pain in her heart as she sings about breaking up with the man she loves and not being able to get over him...still obssessing over him even though he's gone. Lines like: "I smoke your brand of cigarettes and pray that you might give me a call/I lie around in bed all day just staring at the wall/hang around in bars at night and wish that I had never been born/and give myself to anyone who wants to take me home." What were the critics thinking when they listened to this album?
6. Silence is Golden: Heard this song first on a live cd and loved it...the hardest rock song on the album...this one is just driving power and Shirley wails like a metal singer!
7. Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go): I still don't know why this song didn't BLOW UP! An instant hit single that never happened! This is one of the songs that gets you dancing, moving...a great sing-a-long song with Shirley pushing her vocals in another zone we've never heard before or since. SHe almost sound like a pre-teenage girl on this one...a high girly voice comes out of her. Studying the lyrics I believe this song to be about a boy who thinks he's a girl and tries to become one.
8. Drive You Home: Probably my very favorite song on the album. Incredibly intimate and heartbreaking. Shirley's voice echoes in sorrow, the music is soft and accoustic...I would have loved to have seen a video for this one. I could almost picture Shirley just sitting in the dark with a single light above her, strumming an accoustic guitar and singing to the ground.
9. Breaking Up the Girl: The second single. Another traditional Garbage single with the great sing-along style.
10. Parade: This is an odd song with this up and down feeling...almost like a rollercoaster of music...it can be heavy and electronic and then get smaller and quiet...but a medium paced pop song.
11. Nobody Loves You: Kind of a spy movie song...has that James Bond feel to it with this Science Fiction effect in it.
12. Untouchable: Another hip hopish song...a decent dance.
13. So Like a Rose: The classic slow song that ends a Garbage record. This song is very slow, but has this great layed back pacing. Shirley's singing again echoed and intimate...heart strumming. The song is obviously influenced by The Velvet Underground. A great closer.
Don't let the critics direct you away from this cd...it is as the title says it is...beautiful. It's also my wife's favorite Garbage album. In fact...whenever I make a greatest hits cd for someone who's never heard of Garbage or their music...I usually put more tracks from this album than any of the others. BLEED LIKE ME (These three come from Bleed Like Me) 19. #1 CRUSH (B-side from first album) 20. SLEEP (b-side from Only Happy When it Rains) 21. KICK MY ASS (from the sweet relief compilation) If you are a new Garbage fan...I envy you. You are about to discover one of the greatest collections of music ever recorded.
